View Full Version : Rock in the Eye!

For those of you who don't wear safety glasses I would highly recommend them. I have never wore glasses of any type and I hated wearing them while cutting or trimming. I always thought I could close my eyes quick enough if something flew up at my eye. I have been hit in the face with rocks many times while trimming, but a rock finally it me in the eye. My sight if fine, but it was a close call. I have a big red mark in my eye now. So wear your glasses even if they are a pain. Yesterday was my first day wearing glasses and I noticed my ear muffs don't fit as well and I get alot of sound in. Are most of you guys wearing plugs? I want to protect my eyes but don't want to lose my hearing either. Be safe and remember your eyes can't shut as fast as you think they can.

I have been hit so hard in the face by objects while weedeating it knocked the saftey glasses off. So defetinitly wear them and hearing protection. You can also have stuff bounce off walls and trees while mowing and it can sometimes come back and hit you in the eye or face. You can go under trees and be hit in the eye by a limb. So it good to wear the glasses at all times

I wear glasses all the time any way. I always buy the most impact resistant polycarbonate lenses available along with UV filtering. it is safe to say that with out my glasses, over the years, I have had enough impacts to them that without them I would probably be blind.
hearing protection? yes. but not for the first three years. now I have hearing loss. is it as a result of the lawn care? IDUNNO. but I know the blowers and mowers haven't helped.

this happened last year, one of my guys was cutting and he had safty glasses on. he hit a rock shot it off a tree and it came back and hit him right in the glasses. if he wasn't wearing them he would of lost his eye, but he only had a scatch because he did have them on.

brians,
i had the same problem untill i used shooters ear protection the fit over my glasses and do not leak any sound
you can find a cheap pair at wal-mart/ k-mart
I wear the plugs that fit on like a girl's hair band. I've been hit so many times, that I have learn my lesson. I've had a rock go up my nose and come out of my mouth (twice). I am considering wearing nose plugs. (what a shot)

I try to wear eye protection all the time. I have tried the glasses and shields. They seem to be too hot to wear, and fog up. Has anyone tried using a debris shield like for using with chainsaws? Seems like the mesh would be fine enough to keep rocks, ect. out, and let plenty of air in. Plus they have them with hearing protection built in....Might try one.

Definately a good topic. I was at a welding supply store the other day picking up some new glasses and saw some that plug your ears and protect your eyes all at once. Instead of going over your ears they have plugs that go in them, looked neat but didn't buy them. You ,ight want to look into them though.
I was a non wearer of glasses until I got hit in the eye. It must have knocked some sense into me cause, I sure learned from it.

Up the nose and out the mouth?? You must be kidding. As far as eye protection goes, I wouldn't be without it either. I use the ones with straps, sort of like what you used in lab in school, that way I don't have to worry about the legs bothering my hearing prot. I am also about to get a respirator for all the dust and pollen. Whooping coughs and sneezes that would kill a rhino ain't my idea of fun.

One pebble up the nose yesterday and one rock ruined a pair of glasses today. Always wear glasses when working. I have found some I really like at Home Depot. I normally wear clear glasses until the true summer months. I now have at least ten extra pairs of glasses in my tool box. They're cheap considering eye surgery. The brand I use is MSA, and I have no problems with them and my hearing protection ( Elvex FM muffs). If you are having problems with glasses fogging up, just drill several small holes around the outside. this will allow air to circulate. I have had great succes with this. Drill three to four 1/8" holes around the outside and no more fogging.

Safety glasses are in style these days and very cheap. No longer the small ugly things that used to be available. I'll try to find out what model I wear tomorrow. They're Uvex but I couldn't find them on their website. They're the best wearing safety glasses I've ever had and they come in clear and 2 different shades.

Try weedwhacking sandtraps at 5-am, after the third "killer bee" sting, you're wide-ass awake. Anyone who does not wear eye protection is just plain stupid.............or just hasn't done it long enough.

I have a deal, I think by Stihl, atleast 5 years ago when I bought it it came off a Stihl display, it is a hard hat with ear protection and a full face net type shield. I think it is more rigged for running a chain saw, but I use it with my weed eaters.

Always a must (saftey glasses that is). I like the little stones that disapear. Also I have learned to keep my mouth shut after chipping a tooth.
I started from the beginning wearing my safety gear.
Found out real early that you won't see it coming in time.
Also I use the foam ear protectors and beyond the sound protection they also help protect from debris strikes and keep little critters out.
Biggest problem now is the rocks in the face thinking about the shield, maybe the mesh. Husqvarna makes some pretty good looking models.

You guys getting hit. Do you have your guards on the trimmer ?

Hawaii's UV index is usually above the "safe" level so I'm always using my Maui Jims for eye shade/protection. Always wear earmuffs! Plugs get dirty and vacumes out my inner ear when removing (painful). Plus, earmuffs give lots of swack protection, you know when you get under a branch somehow not quite clearing and it swacks you ALWAYS on the face/ears. Ear muffs protect against major swack damage.
So, I just push the eye glasses up a little off the earlobe and the muffs fit just fine.
Hope this helps.
Aloha, P.Y.S.
It is true. I had it happen and I stood there and was coughing and spitting. When I had it happen for the second time, I couldn't believe. How it ended up in the mouth, I don't know. Not a pleasent feeling, and I would not want to do it for money neither. LOL
Sammy,
Yes my guards are all on. The only thing that the guard does for me is cut the line to a sharp length. They do absolutely nothing to protect you. If it wasn't for them keeping the line sharply cut and to proper length, mine would be off. Tap and go, no stopping to cut the line to length.
Ive also ingested bugs via nasal passages. I'll agree with cos, its not a fun thing!

My brother bought me a pair of Smith & Wesson saftey glasses. They can withstand a .20 cal from 20 feet away. They have all kinds of saftey awards and such. I think he got them at W@!M@rt for about $12. They are the best glasses I have ever used, pick up a pair.
I would need them for when I go down town. LOL
Cause ya neva, neva know!

We wear wrap around sunglasses mostly when trimming. I find it humorous when I see guys trying to be studly and wear glasses by gargoyle or oakley etc.
I think that its just a matter of time before something devestating happens to those that do not.
I have even noticed some of the older pros using those googles that strap behind the head like we used in shop class this season because of all the rocks and heavy road debris this spring.
Kris
Just today ,I saw a tree out fit using a chainsaw without eye or ear protection. And the crew was working a few feet away from the chainsaw user and they also didn't have any PPE on either.

I've got hit in the eye once, had blurry vision for around 3 days. The guards were on, however I think the rock hit a fence and bounced back.
Eye & ear protection are a must.
summitgroundskeeping, I use the S&W also, Norther Tools sels them also, good glasses.
