How sometimes you just don't think of the simplest things. I was talking w /my wife's grandma today about advertising, ya know post cards, flyers and stuff like that. When she tells me that in Atlanta people have been taking business cards, a strip magnetic tape and sticking them to mailboxes. Just a small square of tape. I could not believe that I never thought of that. It defeats having to spend money on flyers, trying to figure out where to put a flyer w/o getting in trouble plus it gives the H.O. a fridge magnet. Am I just this slow or does anyone else think this is a good idea?

ive seen it around here a few years ago once. dont know the legality about sticking it to a mailbox, though. maybe thats why i havent ever seen that guy mowing or anyone else try it.

I think it is a good idea, cheap and efficient. You could cover alot of customers in a really short period of time, and possibly not even get out of your vehicle, as long as it is legal to stick to the mailboxes. In the northeast, many people also have metal storm doors, the magnets would stick to those as well, if customers arent home to answer the door. Anything that is cheap and efficient for advertising will be good for the business.

I personally wouldnt go messin with peoples mailboxes, inside or out. Im not sure of the legalities of doing such, just doesnt seem like good place for them. Its a creative idea though, I'll give ya that. Just dont think it'll work w/ mailboxes. Good Luck:drinkup:

The "big picture" is that It's VERY ILLEGAL to do. It is a Federal Violation to place anything IN or ON a mailbox or any part of it...including the post even.

Yes refrigerator magnets are a good idea, along with all other forms of marketing/advertising. Useful for you and your business, well only you could understand your market and how well it would be received. I have thought about using magnets, but how to get them into the right peoples hands (potential customers) with a method that won't break the bank so to speak. See I've gotten kind of tight with my advertising dollars because in my market the results do not even come close to validating the costs. Word of mouth has probably been the best form of advertising for me to date. The magnets would be a great promotional item, but again the problem for me is the mechanics of getting them in the right hands.

I might be doing some advertising with door magnets. Im having door knockers go door to door this year and was thinking about having them put a magnetic business card and a broshure in a little bag to place on the door. The price i got on 4 color magnetic business cards was $.18 each. With the cost of labor, magnets, brochures, and bags to put on each house visited would cost me around $13/hour, to go on about 25 houses. Obviously the more houses visited the higher the cost in material. My grandfather did magnetic business cards for his mortgage business, just got in a client from it this week from 6 years ago...
Also, Green Pro, im not so sure whether their is a 'right hands' for this type of advertising, unless you mean by the the right demographical areas. A magnet is going to stay on a majority of the peoples fridge, who knows when their mower is gonna break down. After subconsiously seeing your name 3-4 times a day, theyll probly remember you, or at least say 'these guys sound real familiar'.

Hey B& D, I think that the Fridge magnet is an awesome idea. As far as the mailbox debate I think that they were responding to your original post. You asked if it was a good idea or not. IMO, I think that they were in not so many words saying they did not think that it was to good of an idea, because it is illegal. I think that it is a great idea to use the magnets, but a bad idea to use the mailbox. Kind of a 50/50 answer. If you could figure a better way to market your magnets I think it would be a great idea. If they place it on the fridge you are advertising to them 24/7.:)

That's what I meant was the whole fridge magnet a good idea. My bad but some people jump the gun and start bashing for no reason. That's what make these public boards a pain. You can get any idiot(s) on here and they can just misconstrue everything just totally miss the point all together.

i see lots of people using real fridge magnet business cards...
not some regular card with a magnet glued on the back...
companies make them.... pretty pricey i'll bet.

Don't waste your time in high end developments or on new homes. Most people today, when remodeling or building new, are installing stainless steel appliances or wood panels that match the cabinets.

Wow that is a really good price! How many are you ordering, and most importantly, where are you ordering them from??
Fridge magnets have been a great tool for us over the years. Some of my best clients were found with fridge magnets. I even used to attach them to mailboxes!! Surprisingly enough I am not currently incarcerated in a maximum security prison somewhere for committing this horrible crime :) .

lol... and likely not one of your magnets you attached to the mailboxes ever made into a potential customers hands either. The person delievering the mail WILL remove such items and collect them on their route. If they have the free time they will contact you about it, if not they go in the trash. Money well spent...
As for the magnets in general, I think they are a great idea but have always been costly.

The $.18/magnet is for 2500. Obviously the more you order the better deal you get. Im getting them through i guy i know that works out of his house. I also got 3 12x30 truck magnets made for $100 from him.

Here's something you could do, you could go to office depot and get the mags and attach them to your business cards yourself for around $0.10 each. Then you could go to a targeted area and knock on doors and introduce yourself and give out the mags that way you know for a fact it got in there hands. I mow at a post office and I asked the post master if I could put them mail boxes and she said no of course. I thought about making them before myself but never have, it might be nice to give to my customers I already have.

With the price i got for a magnetic business card (.18 each) it would cost more to get business cards made and attach the magnet to them, and wouldnt look as good. A 4 color business card cost me $100 for 500, and 100 magnets cost 8.95, or roughly .09 each. it would probly cost me .25 per card to to use adhesive magnets, let alone the time it would take to do.

I put my magnets on the back of my door hangers. You just take a little rubber cement and stick them on the back.
I hope they make it to the fridge!:)

Hey B&D,
I have been do ing just that for the past week in my target areas. Problem with flyer is that they either fall off or get blown off or just thrown a-way. I will also state that it is NOT illegal to place something ON the mail box. In is not ON. My cousin is the Postmaster in my area and he said you can place on as long as it does not interfere with the postman delivering mail
