Most straight shafts have a solid driveshaft, and the curved ones have a cable-like driveshaft. It used to be that the solid ones lasted longer, however, with technology now, you can get pretty much any GOOD edger you want. (NON ECHO 200) It's best if you can demo one and see if how you like it. Both are different and it just depends on which one you like the feel of.

What don't you like about the Echo 200 stick edger? I was considering getting one.

I have the ECHO PAS 260. Power source with the edger attachment, plus hedge trimmers. Power and trimmers will run you 500ish, edger 100. I haven't used it a ton, just bought it at the end of last season. So far so good, I have had good luck with echo in the past, thay stand by the product with warranty issues. For me this was a good buy becuase most of the other attachments/ brooms/ brushes are all about 100 each so you can add equipment without to much expense or bulk.

I have both straight and curved. Both Stihl brand. I really prefer the curved one. Seems to be easier to follow the sidewalk and with the head offset its easier to hold. The straight one tends to throw alot more dirt on me because of needing to stand right behind it more. I havent noticed any difference in power between the two.

The PE-200 is a homeowner stick edger. You need the power of the Echo PE-230 or 260 for commercial use. We have used the PE-260s for years and they work great!

I own the PE-200, and it sucks. It's VERY weak. If you're doing normal edging, it's fine. If you're doing first timers or edging in the mud or slightly wet dirt, it bogs down BADLY. I would go Stihl or Redmax if it were me. I don't know what I was thinking a couple of years ago. ;) :dizzy:
