I got a delivery of mushroom soil (5oyds) last month....Lately I have noticed a strong smell coming from the pile....is this normal?
Can I test it somehow to see whats going on with it?
The smell is almost like methane...

Just to let you know, topsoil (and compost) all have what they call maximum storage elevations, which basically dictates how high an actual pile can be. In other words, when the piles are two high, ares inside the pile become anarobic (lacks oxygen) and processes start happening. Anyway since you have mushroom soil it is very organic, and what you are smelling is more breakdown. Is it covered? does it get rained on? just like a compost pile you dont want muchroom compost staying wet, it should be moist, but not water logged. If it is outside in rain, you should turn it over to disperse the water, and to airate the pile

I've just received a sample of mushroom soil, but have no idea of exactly what what it is or how it is to be used. Looks like compost with wood chips. Does anyone care to explain mushroom soil?
