These are a must have tool for anyone that works alone and they make a 2 man crew more productive when laying out a parking lot.If you just need it for chalking a line on driveways, you could use a one piece handle ( seen on left) it wont hold the extras but it is very handy. Your chalk line ring will slide over & down the handle so the string goes under the weight with little effort.
Most of us have enough scrap around to build one or two. It took me about
3 hours to build two of them.
Weight...2" x 16" solid shaft (anything that sits flat,is 6"x6" & 14-15 lb will do)
Rail...3/8" or 1/2" x 27" steel rod or rebar
Handle... 5/8 or 3/4" x 12" rod or rebar
Tape holder...1/4" x 3" rod or bolt
Crayon holder...1" pipe x 3"
Wood dowel...3/4 x 28" (painted red)
Rubber hose ...3/4 I D x 6"
Put three 45 deg bends in the handle as shown. & weld to rail.
Put 45 deg bend on tape holder about 2" out. & weld to rail 16" up from bottom.
Cut 1" x 3" pipe to 2" & 1" pcs. weld 1'' pc to back of handle. Weld 2" pc to weight.
Weld your weights together (if needed)
Weld handle/rail assy to weight & paint. I drilled & taped the first one, that took to long & was hard to get stright without a drill press.
I used elect tape for the stripe. Use 6" hose to hold crayon to dowel.
18 lbs total.
