View Full Version : Dodge's 5.7, Ford's 5.4, GM's 6.0 gas eng.

I am looking for unbiased opinions about these engines. I am currently looking at a Dodge 2500 4x4 with a hemi engine. I was wondering is this engine built for towing and the like. I'll be towing a 7x16 trailer with three z-turn scags and the like. Has anyone had any longterm success with this engine? I know Ford's 5.4 is a proven engine, and the GM 6.0 is a good engine. I just don't know? Maybe I should wait and hunt for a cummings diesel from Dodge. My dealer has a 2004 model, with 40,000 miles on it and it's a 4x4 quadcab loaded but he wants $26,000 and I thought the price was too high. I got hime down to $24,300 but I just dont know. I compare prices on Ebay, but upon closer inspection, a vast majority of those trucks look thrashed. Opinions please.

Expect HORRIBLE gas mileage from the hemi. 24,300 isnt a bad price at all for that truck is it a auto or manual? All gassers seem gutless after ya have used a diesel...

It's Cummins not Cummings!

For towing I would recommend going diesel. Better gas mileage, better pulling power, higher resale value. I have also heard that the Cummins has the best resale value of any of the diesel trucks from the Big 3.

You can find real good deals on autotrader.com. I have bought all 3 of my vehicles from there. My latest one was a used 2004.5 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 Cummins Diesel Short Bed SLT loaded with 6500 miles on it for $33,100. I recommend looking there.

Does it have the 325hp//600tq engine? If so I would be all over that one.

Since when do diesels have gas mileage? lol j/k

Yes it does.. I'm going back to the dealer tomorrow, and try to work-out a cash purchase.

The ideal truck would be a Maxidyne, Duramax ,Cummins or Mercedes diesel with an Allison tranny on an 80,000 lbs mandrel bent channel frame. Cab wise, Ford.

Brakes, GM all the way. Suspension, Mack camelbacks. Rear end, Eaton 66.

Good point. However, I've never heard the term "diesel-mileage".

Same goes with mowers. Some guys talk about fuel mileage with mowers. Sense when did we know how many miles we cut per hour? lol...The correct term would be fuel efficiency for both instances, I guess.
