I am new to cheicals, I read that most people are 4 step. Pre-emmergent, weed and feed, weed and feed, and fertalizer. Is this the best set up?

4 to 5 apps is a good program with subsurface insect control as an additinal service if grubs are a problem in your area.

Only Tru Green does 7 regular or more apps here and thats criminal in my opinion.

I agree with the 5 apps, that is our main program, we do have people that WANT 7 apps, for some reason the have it stuck in there head they need them.

6to 8 apps is the norm here

Considering a four step program is adequate her, in fact three would work find after a couple of years, I would think 4 app in your area is plenty

This is a good question. I to was wondering about this since this is also new territiory to me. How long after each application should you wait before the next one and also what if your yard already has a lot of weeds in it? Im working on my late fathers yard and it has great soil but a lot of weeds. Im trying to get the weeds choked out and get the St. Augustine to start taking back over. Most of the grass he has is winter annual blue grass. Its not a bad looking grass but I dont like it and its not what I want.

I've been doing this a long time and whilst some of my methods and knowledge is old school I still adhere to and stand behind the no more than 2lbs of N pr 1000 in the growing season.

Thats something I learned 20 years ago before and sortof during the changeover to mulching mowers and leaving clippings behind....Which, can add a lot of useable nitrogen back to the soil.

"It's Pie, and Chips....For Free!" lol

Now back in the day when I started with Davey....and Tru Green they were applying 1 pound of N per app....and did four with an optional late fall feeding.

Now...at TGCL they apply 7 apps and you're lucky to get a half pound each time. Basically they made the apps weaker and spread them out .....increasing profits.

Its not unlike how TGCL grows rapidly as they buy every lawn care company in their way.

Bottom line is.....dont model your agronomics after TGCL. Or anyone else that does more than a reasonable amount of applications per year. Not only that....a lot of us cut grass too and over fertilizing is common place.

Easy on the fert....heavy on the irrigation, aeration and proper mowing.

No tricks

Penn State has been recommending 4-5 lbs N per year forever for a home lawn in Zone 6. Why do you feel 2# is sufficient?

I put down 7 apps per year. Everyone in the area does also why put down less and miss out on the extra money. If you Charge More for the apps. and put down less rounds people come in and bill monthly to make it look cheaper

I bet detroit , michigan is in zone 5, maybe zone 4, their is one difference.

I only put down ~3 lbs, I'm in zone 7, growing cool season.

What about the different sources of n, and the amount of n that you will lose.

these are all factors!!!
