In August, I purchased a house with a backyard in horrible condition. Long story short, I am going to level the backyard, keeping only 1 maple and 1 oak tree. The trees that I am cutting down are pine. Once the trees are cut down, topsoil will be brought in and the yard graded. After that, what do I do? I think the soil is very acidic because of the pine trees. Moss is growing and the soil feels very springy and mushy for lack of a better description. What should my next steps be? What kind of seed should I use to produce a thick, green carpet of grass? What about Canadian grass? Is that good grass seed to use?

See a local extension agent and have them do a soil test for you. That will tell you soil type and which amendments you'll need.
