different techniques for starting a new lawn

i assume that the only two ways that professionals install new lawns is either by seeding and sodding? no one messes around w/ sprigs, stolons, or plugs, do they?

We compost seed most of our lawns. A one inch layer of compost is blown onto soil with our bark blower truck. Seed, fertilizer, and polymer are metered into the compost on the truck. A temporary automatic irrigation system is set up as part of the contract. This method is a little bit cheaper than sodding. No mess from straw blowing around. It's a good option for new homes that are certified as 'Green Built' or for commercial buildings that are 'LEED' certified because a waste product (compost) is used to establish the lawn. With proper watering, compost seeding produces a thick stand of turf in 3-4 weeks. (But so do other methods) We try to steer customers away from sod because of problems with necrotic ring spot a few years down the road.
