Spoke to three potential customers yesterday afternoon while doing flyers in a neighborhood. All of the families were home (all next door to each other) and I asked them if I could give them an estimate on the spot for spring cleanup, mowing, mulch, etc. Much to my surprise I was lower than the person they had used for the past 3 years. Mowing wasn't a big difference ($35 for us, $38 for them last year, plus they expected an increase to $40 this year), and mulch was about the same (we were $65 a yard, they were $60 in years past), but the spring cleanup shocked me. I wrote down $200 for each home (edging a few beds, very few leaves, and some raking--2 guys maybe an hour and a half)--they said wow, were were getting screwed, we were paying $350 for spring and $350 for fall. I was a little scared at $200, was thinking $150 but went for it. Can't believe that difference. All 3 signed up and switched to us and they all said 'thank for you for being honest with us. One person said 'your industry either prices too low and goes out of business or too high and gets a shaddy reputation. You are right in the middle. (although I thought I may have left some money on the table, that made me feel better). Anyone hearing things like this?
