I have several dead patches in San Antonio, this was due to lack of watering last year, and very hot, dry weather, also some areas just dirt, clay, shell, soil, question is I do not know how to replace st augustine grass, do I cut out the old, put down soil, or what. Here there sell 1' squares. New here my sound like crazy question, but need help.

You have two choices.

1) Replace with SOD or 2) Try plugs

If you want to replace the affected areas with sod, you must dig out the old grass, grade the area down so that the new piece(s) will be level with the surrounding grass and water water water.

If you want to put plugs in, I will note that although this is easier, the results are usually poor. But anyway, you need to get a flat of plugs from HD or somewhere and dig a hole, insert the plug as if you were planting a small flowering plant. Then, water water water.

Hope I am clear and you understand the process, if not repost and I will try to make it a little simpler.

About how far apart do you plant the plugs? 4-6 inches or so? Thanks.
