Old kaw 17hp cracked it's block on my last yard of the 2005 season.:nono:
Just put my brand new 22HP B&S twin on. Can't wait to try it out and see how it does on tall thick spring grass.

Looks good. Let us know how it works out.

Looks good, but why didn't you just put a new short block on it, rather than putting a whole new engine on it?

Kawasaki doesn't make a short block for that engine. An identical replacement Kaw. engine was $990. I got this one off ebay brand new for $336.

Has the new B/S been tuned to the mower. Like the govern, idle, and check if the blades are spinning at the right speed at WOT.

That looks like one of our olds one but older. They do keep going.

Not sure what you mean. And how would you check them. Clue me in.:)

It idles fine, and has full throttle. Are you saying the blades could be spinning to fast?

The wide open no load speed should be checked with a tachometer. It shouldn't exceed 3650 to 3700 rpm, But you don't want it below 3400 either.

That's a good looking installation! Have you tried taking the deck cover off yet? It looks a little close there.

Didn't know kawi made a 17 single. Hmmm. Learn something new every day. Now I wonder what I forgot that took up that brain space.

sounds like a good set up but why can't I view the pic?

That 17 one lunger Kawi made it into a lot of Lesco and John Deere mowers.

That B&S 22 should do well with only 48" cut!!! Probably make it last longer too! I'm sure it's much smoother running with less vibration.

Get a tach on that new engine and adjust as per RestroRobs specs. Most likely it'll be slower revving than it should.

I'm going to buy a sendec hour/tach meter and find out what the RPM's are.
It's funny you guys mention the rpm's because it doesn't sound like it's running fast enough. The throttle cable pulls the linkage all the way till it stops. Only way to make it go faster is cut off the stop. I'm real curious now, but have to wait till I get one. Russo's have one for $30 + shipping.

Looks like the Intek to me.

I bought one from a local shop. Hooked it up and it reads 3240RPM at full throttle:cry: . Idles at 1750. The only adjustment I see is the screw highlighted in my pic. But if I turn up the speed at WOT to 3600 I lose my idle. It won't idle down. Please tell my I don't have to play with the govner where it comes out of the crankcase.

Can I just grind away or notch this out, or won't that work.(see pic) This pic is at full throttle. It stops when it hits that tab. In the other pic you can see where it is a idle. Also I checked my WOT RPM's on my 14HP Kaw 36" and it read 3500, so that one should be good.

Thanks for all the help so far.:usflag:

Hopefully RestroRob will step in here. Without seeing the linkage move, and what it moves, I cant tell what needs to be adjusted. Sometimes all it needs is a cable adjustment, sometimes the entire housing needs to move slightly. Other times, rods need to be bent. I don't know the proper procedure, but hopefully someone will.

3240 is too slow.

3500 on the 14Kawi is also too low. <----they're easy to adjust though.

Nooooo,Don't cut anything, Behind the throttle plate you see a spring connecting the throttle control linkage to the gov. arm on the engine. The ear that the spring hooks to on the control plate is where to adjust. Just bend the ear where it puts more pull on the spring and that will increase high speed RPM and not effect idle RPM.

TLS

That adjusting screw is your idle speed adjustment ONLY. Not for high RPM setting.

Nice clear pics BTW!!!

I just bent the linkage where you said to. High idle 3630/ low idle 1900.:clapping: :dancing:
Thanks for all the help. :cool2: I'm glad I posted this thread. I would of been trying to cut at 3200rpm and probably swearing at the new engine. Should I bump it up to 3700?

TLS

I'd leave it there for a while.

But put that 14Kawi up to 3700 for sure. Make sure the aircleaner is new/clean and it has a new spark plug in it. Fresh fuel as well.

Get them warmed up good prior to testing RPM's. Cold, they won't show as much. When warmed up, you may see 3650 out of that Intek.

That tach cost me more than I thought. I went to buy just that for $35 and ended up leaving with a new Stihl FS 100rx Trimmer.

HaHa . I just got married 6 months ago. I tried to get her to cut our grass with my 21" selfpropelled toro last year and she ran it up a telephone pole.;)
She won't be touching anymore mowers.
