View Full Version : Our New Truck Concept.

As many know who follow my posts we have been looking into purchasing a new landscape maintenance/install truck. I have been set on the switch n go system for the price. We are thinking of trading in our 99 f350 diesel for this truck.

The truck we are pretty set on is a 4700 series international, 100k or so.
DT 466 motor with 14 ft switch n go with several bodies. (drop, dropside, chipper/leaf.) Price is going to be around 32,000 Dollars.

It will be capable of holding MANY items for spring cleanup mulching, stone and sod install jobs, leaf removal jobs. The truck will run a 3 or 4 man crew.

Attached is a picture of the idea we have in mind. 24x24 x 6 aluminum tool box on the drivers side and a storage area like the tree service trucks have above the cab.

Any ideas, comments, etc. I know a cheezy drawing.

I have become fairly intimate with the intimacies of International Medium Duty Trucks.....I own a '97 4900 and the only thing that has not been replaced in that truck is the driver ( me ).
Are you going to purchase this truck for yourself or resale? Weight rating? Air brakes? From your post, I assume you are looking for a new truck instead of a used truck....why? How many horse power and what type of engine.....Navistar, etc? Air ride seat for driver?
From what I have been hearing from the mechanics and service staff is that the new trucks, although really nice, when it comes time for maintenance and replacement of any of the new electronic items it is extremely expensive. Most guys I know who are buying medium duty are looking at older ( 97 and up ) rental fleet trucks that had box vans on them and then converting them over to whatever their needs are.....used trucks are easy to find and very inexpensive if you are selective.....

Used 99 2000 International 4700.

Navistar 466?? I believe not the smaller 444

Im unsure of the tranny, Auto would be nice for the use of my guys but... 5 or 6 speed is an option.

It would be a 25,500 gvw, possibly derated to 22,500 to be able to tow a leaf loader (trailer type) or wood chipper, without a cdl.

Overall I want a truck that will last, not be overweighted, easy to drive, and o did i mention reliable. Its this or a 550 and I can get an international for about the same price, which i think is more truck.

I would get a bench seat, But I would love to upgrade to the air ride for drivers and a bench for everyone else but, Its whatever i can find used.

Also we would stick with hydrolic brakes.

Any insight into these trucks?? more inspections, more fee's etc

This roof top storage can be bought from Big John Mfg. and it is vented that is what we have on our 4900.

I took a look on Big Johns Website. I see what you are talking about, but they dont list it like it is sold seperately. You could build a pretty nice over-roof storage area for pretty cheap.

CrewCut- You would need a different bumper to hook too in the front. You woud want something fairly strong for mounting points. Your idea is something i had never considered. I hope to purchase a switch-n-go in the next year or so. This seems like a great idea for extra storage. If and when i get a switch-n-go, i will certainly build a storage box similar to etwmans. If i went this route, i could possible weld a small ladder inside the box so i didnt lose the visability of the ladder up front. Another option would just be some heavy rebar steps welding every 14 inches on the inside back of the switchable beds.

I was thinking of Building the rack.
1.5 tubing or 2 inch tubing, weld to the tow hooks in the bumper a horizontal bar and then weld off of that. Either way i have to find a way to carry all the equipment I want on the truck all the time.

Any ideas

Man, your on a role! from that Dovetail landscape body on the Ford, now this, sounds pretty awsome. Good luck with it....sorry this didn't answer any of your questions though

CrewCut - I looked at that truck last night on ebay. That is exactly what i assumed you were talking about. The only difference is that the latter location would not work for my setup.

Lets hear some other ideas.

i actually had a welder at my shop coming up with the same idea for our hydroseed so we can stock more bales of material up there...


I was thinking like this..

Crew - You might look for a chipper truck with a removable top, and build from there. It would have the rack over the cab, maybe some side boxes and the 12-14' dump bed. One thing to watch is the empty weight of the truck. This size truck can be 13,000 lbs or more empty, and the more gear you hang on it, the closer you get to your 26,000 max GVW. There is a company called Opdyke's (in PA, I think) that specializes in utility and forestry trucks. They advertise in the truck mags. Good luck. GB

Well when you need something bigger you just do, I overweight that truck every day.. It takes it, but it would be nice to not always overweight it
