Looked at a tuff job today!!

I got a call for a retaining wall in a lake community yesterday. Went and looked at it today. Worse than i could imagained! In this lake, the houses are extremely tight and there are alot of hills!

Well this guy has a driveway that is about 25 wide and 20 deep. It happens to be held up by a rotted 6 ft tall rail road tie wall. Things are so tight that i will have to excvate out between 50-60 yards of material and have it hauled right out of there since there will be no where to store it on site. Than as i build the wall i wil have to have soil trucked back in 10 yard intervals proably.

Then i have to figure out how to get 500 block down to the wall base. It looks like i can make it down the steep slope on the right side of the driveway with a tracked dingo or mt but i will not be able to bring many down at a time.

Hell, it is even a engineering nightmare. You have the surcharge from the driveway to deal with, then a guard rail and some kind of drain to address. Yes this wall will be engineered!

Its going to be a tough job, but the customer will pay for the BS and all the extra deliverys i am going to need. I pretty much have all the logistics figured out. As long as i only need to do 8 ft grid it shouldn't be to bad. Any more and i won't have any driveway space to stack material!

Anyone have any good stories about tight space jobs?

If it not tough or restricted or some other nightmare then we would be bored. Crap jobs is what we specialise in. All our stories are about tight spaces.:) Just roll out the payup payup

We did a job last year i believe at a house on a lake....they wanted a retaining wall in the back yard to replace RR ties that were rotted, the back yard was a complete drop off, right down to the lake, and it was constantly muddy which also was a pain, it was scary driving down the hill with stone or material, we acctually were able to back dump trucks down the hill after we made a QP path, still a couple times the truck got stuck and dumping the truck was scary, with all the weight in the back the front wheels bounced off the ground....got the job done though, turned out real nice....I think the height of the wall was around 15-18ft.

I just looked at 1 this morning. In town right side of house 3' between neighbor. Left side had room but 1.5' off of steet to sidewalk 40' steep bank to back yard and a hill behind house. Lady wanted to cut out for picnic area. I told her to be happy eating from kitchen table. We would of busted city sidewalks trying to get bobcat up over, then street was like a 1 way street and to park dump truck and tie up whole street! No way i finally graduated from **** like this.
My first terraced retaining wall i ever built. We could not get from behind to fill so we had to bucket sone over first wall and hand shovel it to second wall. Yep, no more of these either.
We had another wall up a driveway, we had a choice of putting the blocks up hill or the gravel. Only 1 would fit it was so tight. We put the stone up hill and the blocks in the street down over a 30' bank. My employee said he would get his brother to hump the blocks for us. I could see why they called him Bubba. He carried all of our 77 lb. allen blocks up the bank for us. His arms were the size of my legs and i am 6'1" and 250 lbs.
We have all been in them jambs before now my business is good and established and im a little older if the bobcat and all the material wont fit we dont do the job. I have too much other good jobs to choose from.
