My grandmother had something similar looking and it turned out to be a rabbit nesting! That thing tore up her yard like nothing I have ever seen!
I suggested trapping or shooting the thing but she lives in the city. She ended up putting moth balls all around the area and it seemed to have worked because the rabbit is long gone, at least for the time being.
Good luck. Hopfully it wont destroy the entire lawn before you take care of the problem.

Could be raccoons digging for grubs.

I used to have something like that in my neighbors yard. It was armadillos.

If it were into the dirt a little more I would say it was a wild turkey. They tear the snot out of my lawn.

Same thing in my yard, always happened at night.
Rabbit, opossum, coon, skunk, take your pick at which one.
 are you on good terms with your neighbors?

Has this job been cut before so far this year? It is hard to tell from the pics, because the light is playing tricks. Is the stuff on top white? It looks to me like snow mold. That and/or powdery mildew. OIt doesn't seem like skunk damage to me for two reasons. One, the hole has a leaf down it it. A better chance would be that the leaf would be kicked out. Second, on the 3rd pic I believe, there is smaller quantities (tufts) in the foreground - unlike the size that is further away. That is how this stuff grows.

Well I didn't get pictures today, however i did notice it looked like something was digging I found holes about 1 inch deep, and the grass is all pulled up, so could this be skunks digging for grubs?

well, around here that would be caused by none other than a skunk digging for grubs, get rid of the grubs and the skunks will go next door.

Do you have moles in Michigan?
Hell yes we do!! The more building they do around here, the worse the moles get. Even when theres no food there, they still get pushed in from the construction sites.
