It's a big buzz word in my area but in my over 20 years of doing this I don't see any benefits it just beats up the roots and seems to leave a sparcer lawn. I feel in KBG, rye and fescues we are wasting our time and actually hurting turf.

If thatch is a problem then the lawn is probly in bad shape to begin with so detatching and reseeding will only make it stronger.

In my area I haven't seen a lot of desire for dethatching but I do find it makes a difference if done every year1

If you have a thatch problem, then you need to de thatch. If not, then it is a waste of time. Bad cultural practices lead to thatch build up. Aerating and mowing regularly and not pounding it wih nitrogen will keep the thatch away.
