i seeded about a 6X6 foot area that was completely bare. The dirt was packed down so I drop off some topsoil on top about 1/2" layer, I put down the seed, and then put down some "petemoss"(spelling) to keep it moist. I fertilized the lawn with my normal fert that i use in the beginning of the season. I will get pictures soon. I wanted to know what did i do wrong or what can i do for it to grow faster. It has been about 2 weeks and there is barely any growth. Thanks LawnInOrder

Depends on seed used, soil temps and how damp seed bed is kept. It has been dry here in NJ so a light frequent watering is needed. Rye comes up quick-Bluegrass takes longer to germinate. After this rain you should see growth.-keep it wet.

It's been pretty dry here as well... I aerated and seeded my whole lawn around mid-march and some of it is up now but some still hasn't come up, has a lot to do with the lack of rain thou this last shower we got was nice - stuff sprouted overnight after I been waiting and waiting and waiting, lol.

it has been wet lately and the customer waters. I think the seed I used was bluegrass. I might try rye grass next time. What do you prefer bluegrass or rye? Thanks LawnInOrder

Ground temp is not high enough...I am experiencing the same thing on over 20 lawns that we aerated and seeded this year already...give it time.

Hasn't been that warm yet here in NJ....You should see it kick in sometime in May....The 2 inches of rain we are getting this weekend surely will help.

Rodfather, what is a good ground temp when the lawns start to grow?
Bobbygedd, i use 13-25-12 and all the lawns i fert are green. Should I have used a starter/ turf builder fert for that bare spot? Thanks LawnInOrder

straight fert? brand name?
LawnInOrder

what do you mean by straight fert? The fert is used comes from a local company "Vigleittes" that all the local landscapers use. It worked well on all my accounts. It greened up the lawn and are making them grow like crazy. Thanks LawnInOrder

For ground temps I'd say 70-80 degrees, really the closer to 80 the better but not much hotter or it's too hot lol.
As for fert, I'd say that 13-25-12 with that high middle number is good, I went with regular 10-10-10 on mine and it worked. Around here we consider most anything with a high middle number to be a starter fert. If they contain a weedkiller they should be under weed-and-feed, also if you told the guy you bought it from what it was being used for and this is what he sold you, I'd say you're in good hands.

what i'm saying is most "fertilizers" used at this time of year, contain a pre emergent, was that the case here?
LawnInOrder

Where would it say if it is pre emergent. I looked on the bag, and it doesn't say anything about it. I would guess it doesn;t have it but i will call the company on Monday and see if they have it in the fert. Thanks LawnInOrder

That's what I was thinking.
Also, if you used KBG, it normally takes 21-28 days to germinate.

If it doesn't say it on the bag then it was just fertilizer.

if not, then your scene is as follows: the type of seed determines germ time. was anything applied prior to your visit by someone else? did u have pre em on your shoes from walking on a different property? did one of the neighbors apply anything to thier yard that may have drifted? was the seed stored in the same room as a pre-em or hebicide? it could be anything. todays pesticides are strong, and lighter than air. it could have easily been contaminated by a neighbor or your own shoes.

That's how we all learn here.
KBG - Kentucky Blue Grass
Pre-emergant is applied to kill the seed(dimension) before it germinates.

I don;t know if anything was applied before to that house or to one of the neighbors. The houses i cut are close together nothing more than 2500 square feet tops. My next question is how should i go about fixing the problem. Is there a fert and seed you recommend. I saw an account that a landscaper did and the seed in one of the bare spots is coming up nicely. He did it about 2-3 weeks ago. Other spots that were bare aren't coming up as nicely. Thanks LawnInOrder

even if there was no pre emergent is it possible that the fert could have burned the new seed?

You can sow some annual rye as the nursing grass until the good grass is established.

I don't think so. I hope i didn't. I set the spreader to the settings that they tell you on the bag. I haven;t had a problem like this with my other lawns only this lawn. What is my solution to this probelm. LawnInOrder

lawn in order where on LONG island are you.... Ask the people at vigliottis any questions you have and they are very helpful..
We put down fert with crabgrass control this time of year(what viggliottis suggest to) and you can not seed within 1 or 2 months of allpying fertilizer with crabgrass control.
the soil could just be contaminted in many ways from before is this a new spot thats dead or does the customer say it dies every year? We have one house where the old cesspool killed a 4 foot section and we gotta dig 6-8 inches deep and remove all the old soil

If yaa used bluegrass by itself...thats your problem...you need a mixture to shade the bluegrass...dig down with your hands ...look to see if the seed has started to germ. yet...if it has sprinkel a bit of mixed seed on top and put a dusting of your peat moss back on
The rye will come up first and the K.B.G should take aprox 4 weeks
Good luck... don,t forget to keep it moist:waving: :usflag: :canadaflag:

I am located in Westbury. The spot always been like that i think. It was bare, just dirt not one piece of grass. Now some of the seed is coming up but not alot. I guess i am going to get some rye grass to put down so it has some grass growing, then eventually the bluegrass will come in and fill the area up. And for the seed i used the Farmingdale Sun abd Shade grass seed from viggliottis. I think it is mostly bluegrass and some rye in it as well as other grass types, but i am not sure exactly what types of grass are in the seed becasue i don;t have the bag anymore
What type of starter fert do you guys use. Thanks LawnInOrder

Bluegrass is by far the best! Ryegrass sucks: 2 reasons....most ryegrass plants cultivars grow in clumps and do not spread (like Kentucky bluegrass does). Also: most ryegrasses develope "rust" by late summer -- orange powder on your shoes, pets, carpet.
Ryegrasses germinate easilly & quickly, and they're cheap. Conversely, Kentucky bluegrass (more expensive) takes 3 weeks to germinate, and fall is the only time you have a good chance of it germinating - especially in poor soils.
