Well, unfortunately it is that time of the year. Been having to double cut parts of lawns. Has anybody else had to start this yet? Got rain here this afternoon so Tuesday morning should be real nice.

Try running doubles. It really helps chop up the grass into smaller pieces. You will probably still have to double cut the really bad stuff, but it will look better when youre done.
So far so good with my double set up. Standard lift with flat blades on top. :clapping:

If double blades were such a nifty idea, then why ain't all the manufacturers turning them out like that? Matter of fact, why isn't there a single mower made like it? Ok, no that is wrong, Sears made one back in the 1980's... It was discontinued after just one year.
double blades is pimping out the mower is what it is, but if you're all about that ok don't forget the curb feelers as that helps also.

Honda's new commercial walkbehinds offer a blade with an X configuration and 4 cutting surfaces. I believe that adding another blade adds to the bottom line cost so most manufacturers feel that it is better for the customer to add. I've asked my distributor about it and he has no negative comments about double blades.
Hasn't gotten away from us that bad yet, but if it does we'll just slow-down the bobcat hydro walk behind to half speed at full throttle and run the Dixie Chopper at about 2/3 - 3/4 speed at full throttle, and then backpack blower if clippings unsightly.
We've found it alot less time consuming than two cuts.
A big wheel trim mower is better than a small wheel one in overgrowth, and yeh we've made two cross-cuts in those areas already this year.

Seems this week (the early spring was quite dry), the fescue has taken off. It'll have to be quite unusual for me to double cut, though. If it's growing that fast, I either blow the clippings with the 8000 or start lifting the deck height a little. Last year I had some commercial property I was cutting at 4.5". Hey, if it's growing that fast, 4.5" looks like a lot.:)

Well, I should have said Wednesday morning in the post above. I have never used double blades, seen it mentioned on here alot though. By going with doubles, how the heck do you do that? Sorry for my ignorance on this but I just have never seen it. With as wet as they were this morning I doubt the double blades would have made a difference. Now I use a high lift on the Scag 36 and that did a wonderful job on the yards that I used the 36 on today.
I have seen the blades on the honda and they look like they would do a decent job.

I run doubles in the spring and it makes a huge difference.
Just because most manufactuers don't sell mowers with doubles doesn't mean it is not effective. Adding 3" pipes, and K & N filter increased my HP and gas milage on my truck by well over 10% yet no car makers equip new trucks with high flow filters.
I have to double cut like crazy in the spring without double blades, with them on I don't double cut at all.

Click on the Dixie Chopper link, there is a pic for reference.
All you do is take 2 blades put them on one bolt, put them in a + pattern, then bolt them on.
I just changed my setup a bit. I am now using the Micro Mulch kit with the standard lift and flat blade doubles. I would like to mulch all year but the spring is usually out of control around here. So we will see how this works. So far so good!

I will give it a shot. Not thinking clearly. The flu bug has hit me. Have you ever put spacers in between the blade themselves.

No, you dont need to. Plus it will lower your bottom blade even more, you dont want that.

Boy I told you I wasn't thinking clearly. Why in the heck would I want to lower the blade any lower. That makes sense.Duh on my part. The doctor had to prescribe some meds for me to get over this cold/flu and it has me not thinking clearly at all.
thanks,

If the meds he gives you doesnt work, try Nyquil, 500 mg vicodin and 2 beers. That will help something!!:dizzy:
