Or look in the yellow pages under paving, and make some calls.
You will never make any money fooling around with 5gal buckets, think 55gal drums.....and yes, gilsonite is $$$

What is Gilsonite?

Gilsonite, or North American Asphaltum is a natural, resinous hydrocarbon found in the Uintah Basin in northeastern Utah. This natural asphalt is similar to a hard petroleum asphalt and is often called a natural asphalt, asphaltite, uintaite, or asphaltum. Gilsonite is soluble in aromatic and aliphatic solvents, as well as petroleum asphalt. Due to its unique compatibility, gilsonite is frequently used to harden softer petroleum products. Gilsonite in mass is a shiny, black substance similar in appearance to the mineral obsidian. It is brittle and can be easily crushed into a dark brown powder.

Gilsonite is found below the earth's surface in vertical veins or seams that are generally between two and six feet in width, but can be as wide as 28 feet. The veins are nearly parallel to each other and are oriented in a northwest to southeast direction. They extend many miles in length and as deep as 1500 feet. The vein will show up on the surface as a thin outcropping and gradually widen as it goes deeper. Due to the narrow mining face, Gilsonite is mined today, much like it was 50 or 100 years ago. The primary difference is that modern miners use pneumatic chipping hammers and mechanical hoists. :waving: .

ONAHILL,

I probably won't use Gilsonite (never say never ) but Thank you for the time it took for the extensive reply, any information that people share is very helpfull as I am adding seal coating to my exsisting maintenance business.

Personally I'd use a Coal Tar Sealer if I were you...

But

This is based on my experience in dealing with Gilsonite in Chicago, it just may be that the companies using it are not good companies.

I don't want to call the product inferior, but if you read National Paving Association forums or any other objective sealcoating forum, they will tell you coal tar > gilsonite. That is as far as quality, not amount of money you can make using each one. Do you want to do a quality job and make good money, sleep well at night and get nice repeat customers or do you want to do an inferior job, "stretch" the truth to your customers and get hardly any repeat business in the years to come?

The choice is yours.

We sell gilsonite type oil based sealer, a gilsonite type emulsion sealer (same equipment can be used to spray, same shiny black surface). Also this sealer can have sand added...and earthtone colors! We also sell asphalt emulsions for chip sealing (tar and chip), tack coats, prime coats and gravel dust control emulsions. Bulk sales only.
