Was given this self propelled craftsman push mower free. It has the primer style carb. It fires up second pull, blows white smoke. There is oil residue in the air filter area. Smells like burning oil coming out of the exhaust. Oil level is where it should be. It runs rough. Does this seem like major internal damage? Could this be something simple in the carb? Ideas please.

Hard to say but I have seen people flip these 21" mowers almost completely over to remove the blade for sharpening and they fill ever thing (muffler, carb, cylinder) with oil. You said the level right now is correct how long have you run it? Sometimes when oil has entered the muffler/cylinder they will smoke for a while after starting until they burn the excess. The running bad may just be as simple as tune up and carb clean.
Hope this helps:)

noticed the air filter is filled with oil on the inside. The breather hose exits under the air filter and it is shooting oil out into the air filter and into the carb. What causes this?
