I use foam plugs that you roll up and insert. The package says they provide 29 decibels protection, which is the highest level I see at the store I buy them at.
I also use JVC noise canceling headphones with my MP3 player that I listen to while working.
I've thought about looking into custom made ones but for the past couple of years I've been saying, "This is the last season I'm going to need them..."

What? I can't hear you! LOL
Peltors here if I wear any at all. Most of the time I want to be able to hear whats going on around me so I don't listen to music or wear ear protection.

I have a pair of pelters, I love the things. I was worried about how they'd pick up the stations since the last set of am/fm headphones I had didn't work well, but they were also from the early 90's. The pelters pick up the main stations real well though. I wear them while doing any work really, not just when machines are going. I wish I would of had them about 5 years ago when I first started working around mowers, wouldn't have this freaking ringing in my ears probably.

I use couple of different kinds, depending...
I like the ear plugs because I got 200 pair at Napa for 40 bucks and now I will never run out because one pair lasts 3-4 days or more and you can wash them at least one time and let them air-dry. Also the ear plugs are the most noise reduction in my experience and on a HOT day, they are more comfortable. However, after several days in a row of wearing the plugs, sometimes they get painful.
I like the Stihl orange earmuffs because they are fast to put on / get off, much faster than the earplugs. Also in cooler or cold temps, they help keep my ears warm but they are not as quiet and I really HATE it when a low-hanging branch tears them off my head. And when it gets hot, I don't wear them, just too hot.
Sometimes I wear my Cd-mp3 player with the Koss earbuds and the Stihl earmuffs over top, that is right awesome.
For the ultimate in protection, wear plugs + muffs at the same time.

Does anyone use the Elvex Com660? I don't need rechargeable ones and these seem like a good price (around $60).

The 660 has a NRR of only 22db so it wont be nearly as quiet as the higher priced units. The peltor worktunes only provide 22db also which is why I feel like they suck compared to mky old pair of elvex COM-75 which had 25db NRR. IMO spend the extra couple bucks and get yourself the COM-75. They are much quieter than a 22db set and the radio holds its station exceptionaly well compared to the peltors. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for! :headphones:

I used to listen to the radio, but my favorite morning program got dropped and I've gotten where I can't stand commercials anymore. The MP3 players are a godsend.

The Com-75's are twice the price (not an extra couple bucks). Are they really worth it compaired to the 660? All I can find out on the web is the 660 has AM/FM and 22db. The 75 has FM only and 25 db. I don't care for AM so that isn't a big difference for me. I'm not sure what a 3db difference is. Also, are the 75's better made?
I was also looking at the Peltors but I've read other complaints about them not getting or holding stations.

I've had 4 sets of Peltors. First set, drove over. Second set, left hanging off the side of the dump trailer, someone between here and 50 miles from here has a set of slightly dinged, but most likely usable Peltors. Third set NEVER worked, would flip in and out of the station just by pressing the side of the unit, fourth set works the best out of the 4.
I contacted Elvex about their product before I bought the 4th set of Peltors.
I listed to AM radio ALOT, pretty much all day. I get tired of listening to the same songs over and over and over on the FM side.
I was inquiring about their set that has the AM. They said they don't make it anymore, just the FM model.
I'd really like something that has a digital tuner, but also that you can run (2) AA batteries in them like the Peltors. Most am/fm headsets nowdays only have (1) AAA battery, and therefore low volume to get through the foam earplug.
Biggest issue I have with the Peltors, 2 actually. One, I wish they were digital tuner, so you could just press a button up or down one or two times to get the station you want, instead of trying to "fine tune" all the time.
The second, is that they ARE indeed sweaty / warm once summer rolls around.
Maybe I will look at those headphones from Best Buy, along with a powerful radio.

I really wish they had the better hearing protection with am radio, I also listen to am radio almost all day. I can only listen to the same song so many times. The ear plugs from best buy look great however I worry that they aren't blocking all the noise that they should, I wish I could try a set out though.

does anyone have problems with the new style work tunes not getting as good of reception, my old set had much better reception than the new(smaller) style. The othe advantage to these are any ear muffs is it keeps the sun off the tops of your ears (problem for me anyway(big ears))

:headphones: I just received my new pair of COM-80R which is 27db NRR, rechargeable, port for mp3 player or cd player or what ever you want to hook up and you can adjust volume from ear to ear. These are 100X better than the peltor worktunes that I have been useing the last 2 years. I can barely hear the mowers at all and with the peltors the mowers were still LOUD. They feel like my old pair of COM-75 and fit my BIG head very good. The radio knob is so stiff you have to force it to turn which makes it so it does NOT change stations on its own like my peltors did every 2 minutes.
ELVEX is the only way to go. Yes they are expencive but in all honesty in this case you get what you pay for. They are sweedish made and the quality is second to none. I paid $180 and that included overnight shipping. I needed them ASAP because I had ear surgery which corrected my very bad hearing and the peltors did not provide enough hearing protection for my now very sensative hearing. If you live in MD you are welcome to try them on but the chances of that are probably slim. I cant comment on the 660 but being that they are elvex I am willing to bet they are of good quality also and if your looking to save money then they would be your best bet. :headphones:

Yup but if you really wanted AM that bad just hook one of those very small am/fm radios to it and your all set. I am about to leave right now to go get the cable to connect my phone to it because it has a built in Mp3 player :headphones:

But, that's the problem. The very small am radios (IF you can even find one anymore) even just AM/FM, they don't have any reception.

I'm leaning towards the Com-75's. I would use them maybe 2 hours a week. I like the idea of the 80's and being able to plug other things into them. However, I'm not sure rechargeable would be the best for this type of use. I emailed Elvex and asked what the batteries in the 80's were and whether they were easily replaced by the consumer but haven't gotten a response (been almost a week).
Can you tell what the battery is and whether it can be replaced easily?

Yeah, the quality is right good, makes you think you got your own stereo.
Now I have the Sony atrac mp3 Cd player, record like 100+ mp3's on one CD and I'm good to go for months at a time.
Had to buy a belt clip-on thing that holds the player, make sure it is an ultra or ueber-sport and a good quality (like olympic grade), the cheap ones can't take the beating.
just make sure you wear something good, I recently had to get a hearing aid, here a pic. of it.

I have a set of ear protection that has a radio in the ear pads. I love being able to have something to listen to and it protects your hearing.
