View Full Version : Where do you buy your plastic bags (for clippings)

I work in an area where I need to bag all our clippings. I've been buying 1.5 mil, 44-46 gal trash liners, from a janitorial supply, but need something a bit beefier. Been paying around $23.00/100.

Has anyone found a bag mfr that sells 1.8 mil (or equivalent) bags, 40" X 46" (44/46 gallon size), I use a few hundred each month.

Thanks!

try ur local home depot/lowes etc for a contractor duty bag, a contractor bag is strong enough to hold little pieces of wood screws etc etc.

Thanks for the idea, they are much heavier but they cost twice as much as I want to pay ($.40 - $.50 each bag). Next couple months when it warms up here I'll go thru up to 100 each week.

Looking for something around the same price I'm paying now, but heavier.

STSLAWN... Why are you grinding me for trying to control my costs?
You said "u get what u pay for". Sometimes NOT.

How 'bout when you stop for coffee and pay $1.09 for 12 oz of coffee at ARCO when only 1/2 block away it's $.59 for 16 oz. at TacoBell.

I figure trash liners are the same way - shop carefully to get the best value. I want a good, reliable supplier for the things I use regularly. The Janitorial supply I use has changed vendors and their current bags split way too easy. Plus, in Summer, I have much more clippings.

re: "getting what you pay for" - sometimes you find a place that has GREAT value. such as your web site.

For example, if I wanted to buy compost at Home Depot, I'd pay over $4.00. My only other choice is to buy bulk. Unfortunately, there aren't any mushroom growers down my way.

$.80 a bag?!? Too bad shipping isn't practical!

Why bags?
I find tarps work fine for me.
I dont like buying those bags, filling 'em up and then throwing them away!
As much as I've used the tarps, they've saved me $ when you consider the time, effort, cost, ect of constntly running down bags!
I may have to break down and buy another tarp...NEXT YEAR!

I know some guys use bagless barrels

BTW, bags (plastic) are measured in mils.
4 mil is twice as thick as 2 mil and costs more.

Hope this helps.

I like the 55 gallon drum liners at Sam's Club. 70 in a box for I believe 13.00. When and where practical, empty and reuse them. They are pretty tough.

I would place the clippings in my truck if I had to bag that much. I buy my bags from wal-mart. I hardly ever use them.

They still sell those at your Sam's? They took them off the shelf at mine over a year ago. Those were good bags at a decent price. Great for leaf cleanup. They did put some 45-50 gal size in but they don't fit a 55 Gal drum.

im not trying to be nasty in any way. but i have found, u can go to the dollar store and get trash bags for a certain price, great buy, but they are ment for trash, not heavy clippings, u go to home depot and buy contractor bags and they are ment for contractors, wether landscape or general or whatever, much heavier duty. so u can buy the light duty for cheap, or heavy duty for higher.

I use Walker mower bags which are nice, strong, and reusable. To different sizes; 7 & 9 bushel, but I think they are out of your price range; $.79 and 1.59.

Thanks for all the comments.
As one of ya mentioned, when you fill a 45 gallon bag it's almost too heavy to lift - and the local Huntington Beach Sanitation dept has a 30 lb limit, which is not too much when you're talking wet grass. I may go back to 33 gal bags - thaough I like the larger container.

As far as using burlap - and saving on bags, it wouldn't work here. There's a waste site that charges $ 45.00 / ton - if I wanted to go dump clippings right into the truck, then hit the dump each day. what I'd save on bags I'd more than lose on time & dump fees. My route "includes" scheduling side trips to parts of the city so I can leave 10-15 bags of clippings for that day's pickup. I inevitably hit the dump once or twice with a truckload - but that ussally includes a small tree removal, palm tree cleanup, etc. (which I can charge a dump fee for).

I will check WalMart for drum liners - I pulled a list of plastic bag mfrs off superpages.com - I'll try them Monday.

Sounds like you need to address the city about starting a city wide compost. Makes the city some money and savesroom at the dump ground for more important things than grass clippings.

I use Costco 39 gal Lawn-n-Leaf. Best price per gallon. And you get enough size to fill without it going too heavy on you.

Also, I use a product called "Easy Bagger". Very simple tool, just a sheet of thick plastic, you reverse roll it and insert in bag and springs open to size of bag. It acts as an impervious liner, inserting inside the bag thereby allowing all kinds of material to go in without tearing bag. When load is full just pull the Easy Bagger out and start over. Also, stands the bag up for you to ease the dumping process. I've used one for over 10 years. Get them from local True Value store.

I bag, and don't ever spend time going to dump/refuse station. I try to get householders to compost and mulch mow when can.

leave a bag of rotton grass laying at the curb in front of a half a million dollar home. now that is real proffesional

sorry but i mulch the half million dollar homes since the yards are so big..and if the people don't mind then by all means leave a bag.besides it's only there one day.even people with half million dollar homes have to put out their trash.sure beats pulling up to those potential clients homes with your trucks bumper dragging the ground because you have a ton of rotted stinking grass in it with a million flies following you down the street. Now that's professional, yes indeed!

We use the contractor bags (3 mil) fill, dump out, reuse. They are haevy enough to do that several times at least.

if your gonna mulch, then mulch. but if u r gonna catch it, then take it away, to me leaving the bag at the curb is a big no no. looks bad, and very unproffesional. ok, mr. LJ??? AND QUIT WHINING!

I carry the 55 gallon brutes from wally world. They dont break, are 25 apiece, and I don't have to fill them all the way . I like the ability to put all sticks, cups, trash in them and have plenty of room. Dave g

Looka likw I need to check WalMart - I dont' mind getting a bigger (55 gal) bag - even though it get too heavy if filled more than 2/3 with grass cllippings.

I have to bag ALL my clippings, some I can leafe (if trash day is "today or tomorrow", but as luck has it, I end up having to haul off 30+ bags each week.

someone who has a route in the same area suggested I "install" my own trash containers at each client's house - dedicated for their "green waste".

As far as municipal composting, they do it! Tbut they still charge $43.00 per ton to drop my clippings.

thanks again for all the comments
