hey there i was just wondering how many of you all remove the debris shields from your string trimmers? i know i do, and i think that it cuts down on the amount of line that i use up each day. any thoughts on this? i know people who do remove the shields, and others who dont. just wanna see the ratio here.

You have a couple months of reading to do Vibe Ray. We just did this same topic not to long ago. Time to do some reading and I know you would just rather ask questions, but try out the search feature, it works. :)

I take mine off and I like it better than with. You actually can control the amount of line, at least with my Stihl you can.

joshua. i can with a string trimmer- trim all the blades of grass next to a plastic garbage bag without tearing the fabric the least bit. this is without the guard. with the guard i am all screwed up from not using the thing for so darn long. try it for a while without. you wont be changing heads nearly as many times each day.

I had all mine off until last week. I bought a new Stihl and decided since it had been awhile I would try it with the shield on. First thing I noticed was it was real nice not to have rocks hitting me in the face while edging and next was it seems to be easier to trim without gouging.

To make a long story short, until last week I was 100% for losing the shields, but now I have put them back on all trimmers.

To those that remove debris shields or other safety devices:

You might want to read the other posts about being sued. If you an employee or a pedestian is ever hurt by something thrown from a piece of equipment you have modified or removed a piece of safety equipment from then you become the only pocket for which someone can sue. In most lawsuits they will name the manufacturer in the suit along with the company operating it because the big manuafactureres are were the big money is. Your measly 1,000,000.00 policy provided you even carry that isnt what the lawyers drool over its the possibilty of bringing in the manufacture as a co-defendent. By removing safety equipment the manufacturer is immediately removed from the lawsuit as you knowingly did something the manufacturer put there to prevent such injuries.

Wait it gets better. Even if you are incorporated, because you knowingly, willfully and recklessly created a hazardous situation, the lawyers will pierce the corporate veil and go after your personal assets, meaning you can lose your house your business and everything else you own. Remember those words knowingly, willfully and recklessly as they will all be included in the lawsuit when filed against your company.

I keep mine tied up out of the way. I can get closer to the edge that way. Use two JD 655 Z-Tracks.

a former partner removed ours from the Stihls, he liked it off. I later put them back on because new employees would allow too much line out and risk ruining an engine. Its also quite nice to NOT catch so much debris on the legs.

I run stihls and I leave the shields on. I am confused as how you could take it off and control the amount of string.
