First post, but I had to comment. What is it with all the smart remarks around here? Someone posts a question asking for help, and all he gets is cr*p. I guess I'll do more reading than posting. ;)

Thank you for thinking my comment was smart. I thought someone may not like it. To many times I am reading comments and questions and it is disturbing how much the language is butchered. I'm have a tough enough time with it myself, but atleast I try. I is easier to shortcut when typing but kids are starting to think it is acceptable in school to write like this. Also, it may be fine on here but if someone wants a succesfull business, they need to consider thier overall presentation. Just trying to help.

You have to try to understand this from a newb perspective...I have spent weeks soaking up the info in this forum (great forum btw!), but when you notice a high ratio of smart-aleck replies, it puts a person off from asking questions. No one wants to be made to feel like a jackass just because they asked a question.

The way I see it.. This is a forum with a lot of professionals, with a lot a valuable advice. Why not, when your asking a question, speak like your a professional. It is a little sad to see all this misspelled words and bad English when you have the tools right in front of you... When I post I always use the spell check. I just think more people should give it a try. I think if you act like a pro you will be treated like a pro. Dat just my 2 cent. Ya git it know?

Well im not a teacher on English so sorry about the language and I gonna try the spelling check so I don do so many errors.

But the thing is that like JLEIGH said there's to many smart asses here and I just look for the professionals that can give some good advise so in the future please if any one in here don't have nothing important to replay don't replay. :nono:

And the questions is on the air.

Good buy, about $1100 is the best you can do here on a 6 x 12. But everybody is buying trailers to get materials to their house to repair it.

Well, if you are going to criticize someone or anyone on this forum (or anywhere else in life) you should make sure that you have the right to do so. From your post above, and the text therein, I'm not sure you should be so quick to pull the trigger. Let's see...

1. "I thought someone may not like it."..... It should be.... "I thought someone might not like it." - INCORRECT USE OF VOICE

2. "I'm have a tough enough time with it myself, but atleast I try."..... It should be..... "I'm HAVING" or "I HAVE"....improper use of a contraction. AND, "atleast" is two words, not one....should be "at least"....

3. "I is easier to shortcut when typing but kids are thinking it is acceptable in school to write like this."..... it should be.... "It is easier to take shortcuts when typing, but kids think it is acceptable to write like this in school." YOU FORGOT THE "T" IN "IT", THERE SHOULD BE A COMMA AFTER "TYPING" AND YOU ENDED THE SENTENCE INCORRECTLY, WHICH I FIXED FOR YOU.

4. In your next to last sentence you spelled the words "THEIR" and "SUCCESSFUL" incorrectly.... "E" BEFORE "I" RULE.... and THERE are TWO "C'S" AND TWO "S'S" AND ONLY ONE "L" in the word SUCCESSFUL

Still think you should be making sarcastic comments about spelling, grammar, etc....?

Guys LOL make fun ok but at least answer the question

March should be good for NC.

I am in VA and I start advertising the LAST week of march, you might want to start one week earlier being how you're a little further south, I'd say 2 weeks before end of march BUT:

Be aware my first week and sometimes my first 2-3 weeks of advertising are a waste of time and money. That is just how it goes but the thing is, you want your name out there when the dookie hits the fan, and I find the exact time is hard to predict because it varies from year to year so I always jump in a little early to make sure I am THERE when that time comes. You having prior experience, you know starting late is not so good, right? Ok, so then.

So, last week or two of March, I'd say any earlier than middle of march is too early but middle of march is likely about right for NC.

incidentally, if the expression is not familiar, it is from the 60's, "get some" might also apply

I'll help.
Put out lots of business cards, knock on doors, put fliers on cars in mailboxes, ext. Get insured. Supply mulch, topsoil, fallcleanups, seeding, trimming. If you don't the customer will find someone who does do what you don't do and then not want the hassle of dealing with 2 or more different companies when they can just have one who does it all- Excluding hydroseeding, tree work, ext. You get what I mean though. Now for a mower get a hydro 36" to start of with (if you have fenced in accounts) and then get a 48" or ZTR as you get bigger. If you don't have any yards with fences then get a 48" right away and get a little 21" just in case you get postage size yards. Get a commercail backpack blower, weedwacker, hedge trimmer and for a broadcast spreader I use two of the big Craftman models ...... for $60 you can't beat it and I have had no problems. Make you HAVE a TRUCK or else you are screwd for fall cleanups, grass clipping ext.

Now Brands/ Makes:

Power Tools:
Sthil
Redmax
Little Wonder (push blowers)

Mowers:
Honda (Commercail)
Bobcat
Scag
Exmark
Wright
Walker
Cub Cadet (Commercail)

Well Sean does not pipe up too much but he is good, some say the best. Anyway, Green Boy, I have been in North Carolina for quite some time now and I don't see a reason in the world if you can come up with the cash now that you cannot start this year. In my first couple of years here I truthfully picked up more business in June and July than any other time. It gets hot and homeowners change their minds about the new years resolution. Just a thought, good luck.

Thank you for correcting me Sean. I just found the spell check on the bottom. I will use that next time which should clear up many of my mistakes. If I received anything with so many mistakes as both, Green Boy1 and myself had in both our post, I would not take that company seriously. Also, sometimes the way people write is the way they speak which is another problem. We wonder why, as professionals, we get little respect. Granted, I'm not perfect but that doesn't mean I am wrong. I should have replied differently and sorry to offend. I thank you for your reply Sean because I do want to be better and it is important to me.

Where in NC, Makes a big difference on start date to mow. Lots of different climates here.

In my area you could start yesterday and fill a route in a week. Too much work. No need to wait.
I start weekly cutting around March 15th and go to about mid - late Nov. than one or two cuts during the winter- more if it is mild. That is for my full service contracts.

No problem at all. I know what you are saying - I did not mean to come off the wrong way - I just do not want anyone to be discouraged about posting on the site. The hope is that people make their best effort to spell, punctuate, and present properly - or at least in a manner that we can all understand and respond to.

I want to thank all who replied to my earlier message. wski4fun, thanks for your concerns, however, I have a wife who is an Administrative Assistant, and she makes sure that all my contracts and fliers have the proper grammar and punctuations..

But, I can't have her spell-checking every post I make (like this one), just for your viewing pleasure. BTW, I'm not a high school kid, I have freelanced and dealt with customers for over 15 years. I do the best I can with my english and that has never stopped me from making a living the three years I've lived in the USA, relocated from Puerto Rico.

So, please be nice and don't pre-judge people posting. Thanks to all and have a nice day.

Sean - Thanks for your concern and making sure we feel comfortable posting on these boards.:clapping:

I just started about 3 weeks ago. I have had some calls and currently have 3 yards and have a mulch job I just bid on. I am picking up stragglers onlong the way. I want to go into this slow so I can: a) Do a good job for each customer and b) Get a routine down where I can make this work to my advantage. Tings vill git betta wit tyme. I don't give up on anyting. Pay no attention to the smart ars comments on the forum. There is a great deal of info that will help you get underway. People sometimes have a good time by giving others a hard way to go. I'm sure no offense is intended. It is all in good fun I hope. Good luck to you!

Sorry green boy1. I should have replied differently. I think customers sometimes do not give us the respect we deserve because of how we present ourselves. I feel the more polished you are the easier it will be to get business and the more people are willing to pay. Although it came out wrong I was serious and not trying to make fun of you. In my area there are a lot of professional people looking to hire a professional service. I wish you the best of luck and if my advice to you carries any weight then I will leave you with a couple of pieces. Always find the time to perform maintenance on equipment. Keep yourself and equipment as presentable as possible. Have some money in the bank as a cushion. I just started again this year and I'm glad I have that cushion. Ask customers to refer you. Be friendly to the competition. They will be a great resource and you never know when you will get stuck in a jam. Please accept my sincere apology. I hope things work out well for you.

I would say late feburary to early march. It's never to early in the winter to start advertising for the next season! If yoiu name gets around enough, people will remember it and call you before they even look anywhere else! JMO
