Back fire

I just replaced my motor on a 48 HP, and when I shut it off, it sometimes backfires. What causes this, and what can I do to get it to stop. New motor is an 18 horse Kohler.

your old motor wasn't a Kohler was it? well thats the only down side to Kohler's design they all do it some times. just let the motor idle at the lowest rpm for a few minuets before shutting it down.
