today we were seeding a house and the house across the street was getting seeded also by another lco. we layed our straw light on the top however these guys loaded it on top of the seed. is this how it should be done? will grass seed still grow?

I think if you do it by the book you are suppose to have a 50% cover on it. Putting it too heavy can do more harm than good.

Here in Ga. the erosion inspection office requires 3/4" to an 1 1/2" on permanent grass.

the only time we ever use straw is when there is the possibility of erosion...straw equals weeds.

I thought straw was weed free. Hay is what has weeds I was told

It depends on if you were chopping and blowing it on or shaking it on by hand. Blown on 1/4" with 100% is what we cover.
Straw can have weeds it depends on how clean it is, same supplier for yrs and we don't have trouble with weeds. However I've seen straw that you could see the seeds in the bales.

So you guys use nothing??? Whats to keep the seed washing away in a heavy rain even on flat land???

PennMulch, or sonmething like that. Lesco's seed starter is good too. I typically do not like to use straw. It still can have weed seeds in it, and they tend to be the kind that takes Round Up to get rid of. NEVER use hay.

so its the straw that has weed seed in it, so are you starting out with sterile soil then.

Wheat straw doesn't have any weeds in it, at least that's what my supplier told me. That's what I use, and never had any problems.:usflag:
