Personally.. I'd stick with OEM Hydro Filters.. at least until your warranty period is up. You get a hydro fail on you and take it in for warranty, it's not gonna make it with a non-original filter on it.

Tried to cross reference the filters at Wal-Mart using the Fram Book but no luck.

Tried the Fram book at TSC - Tractor Supply Company and was successful in finding my Kawasaki 49065-2078 crossed reference to Fram Filter PH 4967.

Haven't been back to the filter section at Wal-Mart but I bet they have that Fram Filter. The difference in cost is about half of the Kawasaki

Try finding a cross reference at TSC or maybe an Auto Parts store.

purolators will work. Just get the same size filter. the pure ones are better then kawi filters.

Oh yeah, what ever you do , don't use a fram filter on any thing you own.

Fram is like the worst filter you can use. For Kawasaki here are the ones that will work:

Fram ph4967
Napa Gold 1394
Purolator L14476 (Pure One PL14476)
WIX 51394

BTW oil filters are not the same as hydro filters, hydro filters trap a lower micron particle. Make sure you get the right thing for the hydros.

Mx good tip on the hydro filters. The purolator you mentioned fits my 17 Hp and 15 Hp Kawi. The metal flake blue looks pretty cool to:)

I was not aware the Frams have a bad reputation. I have a 1993 vehicle which I have used Fram filters in since the first oil change. Before that I had a 1972 vehicle which I drove 21 years and I used Fram filters since the first oil change. Neither ever used oil.

Gonna do some research on this subject though.

I believe all Kawi's use the same filter.

As for FRAM....not the best. Their Tough Guard line isn't that bad though (thicker case, better O-ring, more filter media, spring pressure relief valve, etc.) It's the "ORANGE" Frams that got them the bad rep.

The Purolator Pure-One rates pretty good.

The problem with all those ratings is that one size can be different than another.

Hydro filters....always go OEM. Not worth it IMO. Plus your only changing them 2x's a year instead of weekly with the oil filter.

If anyone is interested K-Mart stocks the Tough Guard filter which fits the Kawasaki 23 HP. TG4967 about $6.50.

Anyone who uses Castrol Oil can find 40 WT at K-Mart . Never been able to find it at Walmart.

I use the Wix 85348 on my 23 hp Kohler. Never a problem, and at $4, it sure beats $10 for an OEM. I use Wix 85334 on my Honda 20hp generator also. IMO, Wix is the best overall in quality. Usually pick up Penzoil at Wallyworld. They had 5qt jugs for $7.88 a while back. I bought 20 figuring with the way the oil business is, who knows where it's going to end up. I see lately, they are now $10 for Penzoil, $9 for Havoline. No sales tax in Delaware! :clapping: I usually make a trip to the shore and stock up on supplies while I'm there.

Ditto on the hydraulic oil filter. You need the better filtration of a smaller micron. I stick with genuine Scag. I think it was $17 at the dealer. If I find proof-positive of who makes it or another manufacturer has a better grade filter for less, I will jump from OEM with that one too. Still looking....

LazerZHP -

If you have a friend who is a mechanic, see if he will buy the filters for you with his account. OR.... open your OWN account! You don't need to spend thousands, or even have to run a monthly tab. You can pay as you go, and still receive the discounted price on parts.

Wix makes the filters for Car Quest and Napa. Only the first one or two digits will change between retailers.
