Evening Everyone, I'm starting out in this business. Plan on buying an existing business with 65 accounts. Question: can some of you give me a run down on the time, manner (and type of bushes) and any other helpful bit of info. regarding cutting shrubs and bushes? Is there a resource (book) that you would recommend that I should read? What does everyone think of Lawncare for Dummies & Landscaping for Dummies? Is it worth buying? Or is it a library item?

Prune flowering specimens after they have blossomed.

Cut evergreens back so that you are only taking off the new growth.

Cut back most shrubs and hedges to their existing shape, and make structural changes by cutting at the laterals(crotches).

Let me add, tell the customer up front what the cost will be and don't underestimate. I took a beating last week doing a spur of the moment job and then the bi$#$% refused to pay my fee.

"Manual of Woody Landscape Plants" by Michael A. Dirr is the bible of the industry.
