Demo'd a 48" WBH with a Sulky this weekend and was very impressed. Cut quality is great and the speed was very impressive. Up in Lake Country - Minnesota we have a lot of lake grasses that have really sandy soils. I was going between manicured lawns and these lake grass areas and didn't see a change at all in cut quality. I finished approximately three acres in an hour and 45 minutes. Keep in mind I am rookie...

I was using a fixed deck that caused a couple of problems in varied terrain. I feel a floater would better cut those dips - no scalping however.

$4800 with Hydros and the sulky, 17hp Kawi... Any thoughts from the gallery? This would be a starter machine...

Way too much money for a walkbehind. Either buy a used Toro
gear drive for less than a grand or buy a slightly used
eXmark/Toro HP ZTR.

A lot of fake LCO's buy those new little ztrs and go belly up on
a weekly basis.

I agree with the Stone. Get something that has a reputation for quality.

I was looking at Cub because it is in joint development with Lesco. I don't want to start out with a gear drive that I am going to want to replace in a year because of its limitations.

The Toro is nice, but that T-bar set up for stearing is a little akward for me. I have also heard that ExMark is going to have some issues ahead considering possible dillusion due to their recent purchase.

I am looking into all options so I know I get a good product but also have to realize that Brainerd Minnesota is no metropolis, so the dealer I go with is only one of a few that carry commercial gear. I don't want to have to Drive to St. Cloud to get my equipment serviced...

I thought $4800 was reasonable for a new 48" Hydro machine?

If that machine is right for you buy it. I paid almost 5K for my Hustler Hydro WB and I consider it one of my best purchases and so do my customers.

Good job, Lake!
Cub Cadet offers a nice hydro, 17HP 48" cut float deck that does an excellent job as well. It might be just what you are looking for. Try it, if you like it, then you should but it! Sounds like a good deal. You can buy used like 65 said, but I think you would be disappointed. You don't know the history of a used machine and just might be buying someone else's problems. Besides, with a new machine you also get a warranty and they (Cub)offers a good one.

Thats to much for a walkbehind with pistol grips and has yet to prove itself. Russ

It's your money so if you like it buy it.

Don't forget about state sales tax!

Did you see that used Toro Z with 30 hours on the equipment forum?

Shop for a small Z like Stone said - maybe buy one in a crate. At least get a price? Try Savilles in New York. The phone number is at www.turfquip.com

I just don't think that the brand you are considering has a proven track record YET. Toro and Exmark do. Think about resale value!

Thanks for the feedback guys...
A couple of quick questions...
What's better than pistol grips? Do they inhibit productivity or something? I am going to Demo the Toro this coming weekend with the T-bar...

The area doesn't offer much more. They have John Deere but that would be a sin in my family as we used to own an International implement dealership that sold Cub Cadet...

All your feedback is greatly appreciagted!

The T-bar is great easy to use and easy on the hands. Good luck

I own that exact same machine(only in green), thing is a great machine. Now it sits alot though, we use mainly ZTR,(Viper), new decks cut great, so good we can use the 60", where we used to use 48" WB. We uise WB for steep hills, back yards, & bagging. Like I said it is a great machine, I'd buy another, but you may want to demo a ZTR. Their not that much more.

Are you running the MTD Pro Series? I'm really looking for the best I can find in the area so I can service easily. I have also found a great delaer that is really good about service with loaners and commercial turn-arounds. I talked to the competition about who to go to and everyone that worked with this guy was very pleased.

LakeCountry:

You might like the t-bar steering of the Toro if you give it a try for an acre or two. I found it to be very awkward my first 15 minutes on machine but after getting my brain & hands on the same page the mower was a piece of cake to manuever and I was trimming around trees and pulling zero turns on a sulky with no problem. I purchased a used Toro Proline 48" (Kohler 14hp, gear drive) with floating deck and Recycler mulch kit installed and a one wheeled sulky for $1000. The mower starts first pull and is a joy to use - I have not had the luxury of trying out hydro WB but am happy with my current set up. I also have a great local Toro dealer and the gear drive seems to be easy to service myself.

Yes, I think u should go with that model. I have the older Cub with the single handle like Toro and it is wonderful. I may not have many posts but I do know that Cub is very reliable. Since I have had my mower I have only had to change oil, belts and blades. This mower runs good, cuts good, and it even stripes!!! So if u need to get a mower, this is the one to get. The pistol grips will come in handy when u need to pop the mower over a brick or something, so yes go 4 it. U have nothin to lose.

Actually he has about $2500 to lose for that's what his mower will be worth after it leaves the dealers showroom floor.

That's because they steer like a tank. You have to push the bar on the left side to make a right turn.

Toro's are also the best machine to buy in conjunction with a stand on sulky. For your arms are in a much more natural position. With pistol grips your arms are out and down and can get beat up by being crushed between the handle bars and a brick wall.

Has the MTD Pro proved itself? Pretty much the same machine as a Cub Commercial. You're still better off with something you know is going to be around for a long time. Cub Cadet has an extremely long history of building lawn tractors and think that they know a little about mowers by now.

I chose to go with the Exmark 52" Gear drive - Much better cut quality and $1600 less!

make sure you drive a whole lot more than a cub cadet or even a lesco viper - also you need to look into financing - last i heard the guys were paying some high intrest rates on who lesco finances with - look long and look hard - you gonna find better -plus if i tried anything new it would be some of hustlers new machines - now thats a mower and thats coming from a snapper lover

Feel like I just posted this not too long ago. I tried Toro, Scag, Bob-Cat, JD, Great Dane, & Bunton when I was looking for a mower. After using pistol grips for a year + I knew something had to go. I did not like the Toro Tbar, felt difficult, Bunton had the tightest grips, BC and Scag also with pistol. Was not aware of Hustler products and a friend told me about Great Dane mowers.

Drove the Scamper and felt right at home, go forward push the indivudal bars forward, back-up pull'em back, stop or fall and let go, the mower will stop. The handles are even close enough I can drive this WB with one hand. Have had no wrist problems since either. If you get a chance try one, my second choice would be Hustler. Here is a photo of the scamper controls:

On the first page of this topic, the guy from Turfquip makes a pathetic PUBLIC attempt to unload some of his inventory on someone new to this site. Someone who came here looking for advice, not a skewed sales pitch. The bad thing is, this guy knows mowers, he deals with ALL KINDS of used equipment, so he probably knows a lot about the topic. Instead of using this knowledge to help someone, he used it to try and create a sale. He insisted that the Cub Commercial brand had not "proven" itself yet and that the new guy should look to the brands turfquip sells and even made a link to his website.

Only thing is, the same mowers have been in production for OVER 5 years wearing Lesco green paint and MTD Pro red paint. These are very good, reliable, fast, and they provide a very nice cut!!!(stripe well) He knows this as a fact and tries to use misinformation to his benefit.

I think the salesmen should keep their revenue hunting, self serving opinions to themselves. And by the way, does ANYONE really use the used equipment forum since he has a hand in it? I know I liked it a lot better when it was just between the members. How about returning the Used fourm to its previous glory when us members were free to barter amoung ourselves.

And Lake Country, get the mower, it is a GOOD MOWER and will serve you well. Can't see buying a mower without good LOCAL DEALER support. Much less a used mower, which is almost always a bad idea. Don't buy a used mower as your main machine unless you like spending your time working on it! People sell these for a reason!
