In the last year I've lost 2 string trimmers, 1 back pack blower, 1 push mower, and 5 gals of gas to thieves.

I just posted the other day. Someone stole my backpack blower, trimmer and some other misc things from my trailer while I was at Wal Mart. I had insurance, it cost me about a thousand dollars to replace my stuff. Insurance is going to pay five hundred.

I hope you have insurance.

I have been paronoid. I'm locking everything.

Go to Lowes and get a 3 pack of those Master Lock cable locks. They all use the same key and you can lock stuff up quick. They are as handy as bungee cords.
Boy, wouldn't you just LOVE to catch them in the act? I know I would.
2 on 1, no problem. My adrenaline would be pumping and someone would have to pull me off them. I've come close a couple of times. I've caught people standing too close to my trailer and hurried over in top gear to see what's up. I give them the stink eye real good.
LOCK UP YOUR STUFF! Even your mowers.

Cable locks only slow a dedicated thief down. They will stop a casual thief in their tracks. Here ya go smart guy.

Yes but then at least half of all thefts really are crimes of opportunity, meaning if dude has his stuff locked, it don't get stolen. Now as for the other half, if someone really wants your stuff, what do you wise guys suggest we do?

I've even heard of trimmer traps getting sawed off in minutes flat, so spending a fortune isn't the answer now, is it?

Well, insurance is one way but, I'd prefer to catch them near a tall corn field myself. Seriously though, these cable locks will stop the opportunist type thief. I service a lot of convenience stores and have often wondered if someone would be so bold as to rip off one of my mowers while I'm not in sight. A lot of landscapers pull in to get gas and I've thought about how easy it would be to just load it up on their trailer. I get uneasy when I can't see my trailer even though I have everything locked, I know how easy it would be. I've been ripped off before and it makes you crazy. I've often thought about setting traps for them. That would be easy too.
It takes so much energy away from my daily life that I just do the best I can until it happens again and try to learn how to avoid that particular type of theft.
I will say, WHEN I do catch someone, they'll pay for every theft I've ever experienced. God help them.

If I caught someone theiving from me or any of my family or friends, I would take out their knee so they couldn't run. Then I would duct tape their hands behind their back. Then I would fire up the trimmer and give them a face lift. Next comes gasoline to complete the facelift. After that is said and done, I would untape the hands, grap one arm at the wrist, twist it so that the elbow is facing up and arm straight, then (while holding the wrist still) with the heel of my other hand I would slam their arm, just above the elbow joint, and break the bone in that area.....most painful. Then I would tell them to come back anytime and we could play God. I hate theives.:realmad:

It's a pain in the butt locking up everything but you have to, even in nice neighbourhoods like where I work. I bet 9 of 10 times its another LCO. Those guys with no decals and crap equipment.

Not locking up your equipment in nearly as stupid as leaving your keys in the ignition. In a one man crew you better lock up everytime.

Get an enclosed trailer. Out of sight of of mind.

How did that lady now the thieves were Mexicans? Did she interview them? Ask for ID? They could have been Kurdish or just a tanned citizen of the United States. I am darker than my hispanic wife and I have no Hispanic blood in my family tree.

Master Python cable locks, can get from a 4' cable to a 30' cable to run thru most of your equipment, yes with enough time, they can be cut, but they have worked well for me.

they SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that's what my partners rig was secured with and 4 of them were cut like butter. he now uses multiple towing and logging chains with multiple pad locks everywhere. the bottom line is that anything can be cut with the right tools, you just have to make it as inconvienent for the thief as possible. personally, i'd love to rig up a sawed off double barrel 12 gauge on a trip wire, but methinks the cops wouldn't understand.

on the other hand (you'll se the pun in a sec), my grandfather's house kept getting broken into, same door every time, and he ran 220 to the doorknob. one day when he came home, the door window was broken again. he switched off the power, opened the door, and found burned flesh stuck to the inside knob. he lives in a rural community, word must get around quickly, because he hasn't been broken into again and it's been quite a while.

tharrell - just saw the pics, my partner's were the heavy "kryptonite" lock cables.

Good God! :dizzy:
How he knew was because I was there. And I asked for some identification. They didn't understand the English language. So I told them that Pres. Bush was looking for them and that he just wanted to talk to them......................They ran like the wind! That's how he knew they were Mexican!
(You ask a dumb question, you get a dumb response. Why does it matter to you?)

The story said the thieves were mexican and I asked how he knew for sure they were mexican. There is nothing stupid about that question. There are all kinds of kurds running around nashville and they look hispanic.

Mexican, Kurds ......... it doesn't matter in this case because whatever they were, they are thieves. Race doesn't matter. They stole something. It sounded like you were trying to make a big deal out of him saying they were Mexicans. Who cares?

I think that kurds, gringos and mexicans are probably going to be of the same race for the most part. If he didn't know for sure they were mexicans it shouldn't have part of the story.

If you had a tracking device on your mower you would be able to find it with no problem. Then show up with the cops and watch'em go to jail.

'hint hint' (2nd time now)well placed stickers on upper truck bed & back window......."Camera rolling" = cautious proceeders(cables thrown in are still good idea,i sure would feel self conscience if i was cutting with the possibiltiy of a hidden camera recording)..and yes tape those 'diabetic needles' to the handle bars/weedeater shafts/seats etc..otherwise,no sympathy from me will be found here, sick of thieves..do something ingenious..learn the art of what works and doesn't(sit a spy on easy pickings out of your trailer sometime with the above, see if they immediately abort..hook up a motion detector chimer that says/beeps something if someone is to close..i really hope someone does something like this here,am i the only one who feels like my system actually works!

Would a motion detector actually work on an open trailer? I have already been thinking about security for when I do get a trailer and expensive mowers. I thought a car alarm would do the trick on a trailer And or your truck or... would the trucks alarm pick up vibration from the trailer if it was sensitive enough?

I have also thought about tagging with gps on truck and large mowers.

if you mean global position sensor..thats brilliant..thats a new one to think on..i think you would have to mount a tube or something on a motion detector so it only has a narrow field of vision so only heads that pop into the trailer get bleeped at,but i would'nt buy anything that had a vibration alert, only motion sensors..here's another though..run wires along/inside the cable locks that when cut...120dbs beeps wake the county..

What part of wichita were you in? East, West, South, North. Broadway, Seneca. I would check local pawn shops. I lived in Goddard for about 17 yrs. Sorry to hear about your loss.
