I stumbled across this little fellow on the driveway. From nose to end of tail 4inches long. Not sure what it is but I've seen a couple of the same dead on the lawn over the past few years.

Moles have much bigger front paws. Paddle-like.

Most like a Pine Vole, maybe a Meadow Vole. These creatures can be extremely damaging to landscape plants. They, unlike moles, eat roots and plant stems. Moles primary diet consists of earthworms and grubs.

With that pointy snout, appears to be a shrew to me. Shrews are carnivorous and eat insects, small mammals, reptiles, etc. and due to a very high metabolism, are constantly looking for food. I think that they are often nocturnal.

It's a short-tail shrew. The long snout gives it away. Voles look more like fat mice.

Whatever it is, it looks exactly like what my father finds caught dead in the skimmers of his swimming pool all the time.

We've always thought that they were moles, but then we wonder why they are crossing the concrete sidewalk around the pool and getting into the water if they live only underground?

I'd say a shrew. Voles have bigger ears.

They are looking for something to drink, so that is why they are getting into the pool. Either that or they are having a pool party and didn't invite you. Leave out some beer, tequila, and snacks. They will get drunk, drown, and then you just pluck thm out of the skimmer.
