How many hours can you expect one of these engines to give good servise. I bought a used 03 with 1100hrs on it in march to mow my 5 acre yard. It runs great and uses no oil in the 40hrs I put on it so far. I wanted a new one, but didn't have the cash. I gave $3300 and hope it will give me a few years before it needs replacing. Thanks for any advise!

There are many many people on this forum that have Kohler engines with over 2000 - 3000 hrs without major problems. It is possible but proper maintenance is a must. I would reccomend frequent oil and filter changes (every 50 hrs), new air cleaner and wrap as needed and remove the shrouding and blow out any debris that has accumulated on the cooling fins at least once or twice per season.

I've seen some 725K's with quite a few hours on them, around 2500-3000 is fairly common. Just do like mowerman said, maintenance! BTW, you got it for a good price!

I plan on changing oil every 50 hrs. Can you buy a foam outer wrap for these air filters?

You may be able to if you buy the Kohler filter. IIRC, this engine does not have the Donaldson air cleaner does it?
