The stump was ground 1 month ago. It was 3-4 ft. diameter maple. IT was ground deap with a very large stump grinder. How should i go about seed or sodding the area.

Remove every bid of the stump chips and replace with good topsoil first then seed or sod as you normally would

Hope they ground as much as they could cause it will rot a couple years down the road and begin to settle. I know stumpgrinders can't get everything but it just makes for more in and couple years. Do as the others have said.

Also remember, the decomposing of the leftovers will absorb a lot of the nitrogen in the soil. Once the sod is well established, keep the fertilizer handy. :)

They will also create a "fairy ring".

What causes the fairy ring like that?

soil born disease. We used to aerify the crap out of areas like this on the golf course and while the ground was still open we would apply promate soaker (wetting agent). Ya really don't want to spend the money for chemical control, it's pretty costly and until recently mostly ineffective.

What causes the fairy ring like that?

Its from the nitrogen released from a buried rotten stump feeding soil fungus.

One of my customers had the two biggest trees in the city (Grosse Pointe Park) and he had them cut down and the stumps ground down a foot. He hired me to remove the chips and lay sod... We took about 10 yards of chips away (no joke). So the sod should come in nice since all the chips are out... Just remember the sod will only be as good as the prep was.

Just a quick comment on the Fairy Ring... most times it is caused by something buried in the ground that began to decompose but lost the oxygen to continue or something that some how has made an air pocket like building materials that were buried.
I once had a client that had fairy ring every year. No one could eradicate it and a large area would die off. After much research, I determined that something must be buried. She denied it but her son decided to see for himself. About two and half feet down they hit something... an old refrigerator buried upside down with out a door.
When ever you see a chronic case of this condition, probe deeply or dig and I bet 9 times out of 10 you'll hit something thats not suppose to be there.:waving:
