I have a follow-up question... If you have a residential scheduled for the 4th, do you make it up the same week, or don t charge them for missing the week?

I'll be working the 4th. Get up at 4:30, do 3-4 commercial places, come home, take the 4 year old to the parade, come home, head back out, do 4-5 more commercial places, come home grill some burgers / hot dogs, head out to the fireworks.

Here's my suggestion. If your hispanic, it would strike an American as disrespectful to work on Independence Day...and if you're
an American, it would strike them as disrespectful to your culture to work. Now, most people aren't that patriotic anymore, but that's my feelings about it.

The workers, both landscape and maintenance will be working Monday, Tuesday they all get a nice holiday rest.

It would be nice to take all the bank holidays off but, we have to do what we have to do. If you can take it off, more power to you. I only absolutely take Christmas and Easter off myself.
Also, I get up at 4am most of the time. I have to drink my half pot of coffee and see what kind of silly stuff has been posted on this website!
btw---There's usually over 180 people viewing this forum alone at that time of day and I'm on the east coast.

I have nothing to mow the 4th, and probably won't the rest of the week, if we don't get some rain. But, I'll put in about 11 hours on my "day" job. Only holidays we get off are Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I really don't mind. I'm not much of a fun in the sun type person anyhow, and if I were, the last time I'd want to be on the lake or at some other recreation area is when all the crowds are there, such as holidays.

We're working a half day monday, no work on tuesday, and I told the guys they can come in at 9 verses 7.

Man, must be nice to have a workload such that can allow for just taking a day off... Ok, not "nice" because if you have free time enough to have a day off that's a lot of income you are lacking.

Working solo I would have to mow from 7:00 am till dark on monday to even get HALF the day off Tuesday. Then I'd be so wore out it wouldn't matter and I'd have to take off and be out for a few hours anyway to stay on schedule.

Needless to say I will be working my usual schedule on the 4th. I'm 90% sure I won't have any customers having get togethers or anything, because, really... Who gets together on the 4th anyway?

Surely no residential customers want you around on their properties making noise, cutting grass and blowing dust around on the 4th, do they? Of course NOT. Stay home!

I had the employees do a small job today, had a blower truck blow in 30yds of mulch at a property and the customer came out when I arrived and was shocked that I sent my guys out on the 4th! I reminded them that it was not the 4th, it was the 3rd, then he reminded me that it was the 4th of July weekend, and to hurry up, get home and have a couple of beers!

See...the customer is always right!

My first year in business I worked on the 4th...it sucked...around 11am a customer came out, gave me a 6-pack and said "Please take this and go home and enjoy the holiday"

So I learned my lesson...if you feel you can't take ONE DAY OFF, one stinkin' day, and I don't care how far behind you are or whatever, you're letting your business run you....

I worked Sunday to take care of Monday and I was going to work today to take care of tomorrow but it rained all day. We need the rain but it still sucks. Not only is tomorrow the 4th but it is also my anniversary. I am going to start about 6 am and finish by about noon. All commercial stuff so no big deal about complaints.

Ya really and likely to shoot the person who shows up on a mower. You would also disturb the neighbor get togethers too. One day off is not going to hurt anything.

We just got back from cutting residentials. Started at 8 and got home at 11:30 and did 12. Now we are only behind by about 4 lawns and that shouldnt be a problem to make up tomorrow or thursday. Nobody complained and actually had a couple come out to just chit chat with us and also picked up an aeration job for this fall all because we worked today.

One day isnt going to hurt anything? Not even if its suppose to rain all day the very next day like it is here? That would be 2 days of no work if we hadnt worked today and would have left thursday and friday with 30 lawns per day for 2 guys in 95+ heat and 90%+ humidity. NO THANKS!

Normally I would have worked 12 hours yesterday and today.

Decided to pack it in at 4 pm yesterday and take my 4 year old fishing, figuring I'd get caught up today some.

Ended up sleeping in until 8 am, so I just waited around and took my 4 year old and 1 year old to the parade, then went to a couple of parties, then took the kids to the fireworks tonight.

Guess I'll just have to make up 14-15 hours myself the next 2-3 days to get back on schedule.

Sounds like 2-3 18-20+ hour days coming up.

Good thing the weather is nothing but 85+, sunny and windy.

You guys are an inspiration to me!!!! I worked over on monday to make yesterday free for my kids and my rental property stuff. Had to catch up today. I can usually bump my schedule wherever I need to take a day off. I like to run my business and not let it run me. Thanks Guys!!!

P.S. I was amazed to see guys from Aus. on the site. Lawn bus. is more than any body gives credit to.
