not a sexist thing but im wondering if any of you guys have women on your crews. reason i ask is because i have seen all the lco's in this area out working and not once have i ever seen a woman on a crew. i figure its because women don't apply for the jobs.

well being a women myself I have to say I don't know about Texas but here in cow New Hampshire there is alot of women in landscaping. personally I myself as one of them being in this field for approx. 10 yrs. I just started my own business and have been doing pretty good considering just started. I would say yes either women do not apply for those jobs, maybe they feel they are not equal oppurtunity. All the landscape co. here place ads in papers staying as they are an equal oppurtunity employer so they get women applying.:hammerhead:

there is a large landscape company owned by a woman, and i have seen many female workers that run circles around their male co-workers.

It's manual labour, no suprise its mostly men, even some of them can't handle it and ofcourse there will be exceptions. Next thing you know men will start being nurses.

The largest privately owned LCO here in Austin Texas is operated by two women - and they run it very, very well.
Their gross revenues are in the $3M range, multiple crews/trucks - a good operation.

I am female, 47 years old, and have run my lawn care business since 1989. I run a mowing route 4 days a week, and do fert/squirt the other 2.

Would hire all females if I could get them to apply. ATM have 3 women (4 counting me) and 3 guys. Attention to detail, better outlook towards the everyday work grind, and being prepared to work every time they clock in are what have so far set them apart from the guys.:weightlifter:

A few years back i seen an all woman crew cutting a large complex. But i only seen them the 1 time. All useing comercial equipment, all 3 had blonde hair. And all 3 wearing shorts. I don't know how people can use a string trimmer wearing shorts. It would tear my legs up.

I wear shorts all year round , dont have a prob trimming, are you holding the trimmer right ??? it should be held on the side of your body so grass and rocks get thrown away from you........ more towards the left of your body, try diff positions and you will know what i mean.

Any body that gets hit by rocks and things is not holding correctly.

I like the picture Mike :D :D :cool2: :cool2:

My wife has worked with me not only as the accountant and business manager but has proved her ability to push the guys around at a higher speed in the field. She mentions her time to mow an area and they push themselves to improve upon it. Of course she sometimes fails to explain that it was a riding mower she used when they were using a 21" push.

After 24 years in the business together I say YES to women on the crew. She has a great eye for detail. Does things by the numbers (accountant) and has her EPA cert. for pest control/ fert/squirt to boot. We organically farmed commercially for the first 3 years of our marriage. Both quit jobs to spend time together to make it work. 27 years later we are still pushing mowers, trimmers and having fun.

I agree that women have a much better eye. That's exactly why my staff horticultist is a female.

I wear shorts, and tube socks. When I trim I pull up the socks, almost to my knees, and they provide surprisingly good protection. When I am using the mower, I push them down. Yea, I may not be the "coolest" looking dude out there, but after all these years I am more concerned about protecting my legs while not overheating.

A few years ago when our farm was leased out to a guy who had it in wheat we baled the straw, I remember one landscaper who was a woman bought almost 3,000 bales of straw that summer, about half was delivered to the shop then on the bigger jobs she had I delivered straight to the jobsite. The jobsite deliveries were nice, all I had to do then was drive the truck to where her crews wanted it unloaded.

I'd pay three good looking women to mow my yard.

My wife may not like that idea though!

In the picture MMLawn posted..she must be posing, not really working. On her mower the compression handle is not pulled down, nor the self propelled handle pulled up. I noticed about the 11th time I looked at the pic.

You are just plain SICK!!! We all know the stander would cover to much of the frontal view. I think she needs a smaller mower. The more time on the prop the better. :hammerhead:
