When looking at mowers some had engines with over-head valves. What does an OHV do for me?

This is a generalization from Honda concerning OHV to Standard Valve engines. "SV engines consume more gasoline and oil, and are noisy and hot. In addition, they have shown themselves to be subject to problems in initial quality. The OHV configuration, on the other hand, is more powerful, economical, cleaner, quieter, and more durable." Almost all of the Manufactures I deal with have gone OHV, what ever you chose stay with a good brand with a good rep and make sure you can get parts in the future good names include Honda,Kawasaki,Kohler,Briggs Vanguard hope this helps:)

Overhead valves place the intake and exhaust valves facing the piston instead of sitting next to the piston like in a flathead design.
Crude example: O=

O represents the piston = represents the valves.

MowerMedic explained the benefits well in his post.
