So I was clearing out some weeds from a flowerbed around a yard the other day, and I raked into a dead cat. Say about 2 months into decomposition... I left it there. The trash cans are all over packed, and can't fit any more, and I wasn't quite sure what to do with it, or if that was even really my job, as I was only being paid to remove weeds.

What would you do? Pick it up, or tell the home owner that you don't do carcass removal?

If you got a shovel then bury the thing. If you don't have one why not???? Just keep the cookies down and you will be OK.

My dog dragged a cat carcass home last week, left the putrid mess on the front lawn. I had brought a customer by to pick out some plants for her yard when we came across the mess. Shovel and a few minutes work put it underground where it belonged. That dog of mine purely enjoys rolling in the worst smellin things around, must be his anti-bug deodorant.

is that acceptable to bury a dead animal in this dude's yard without consulting him, or asking where would be a good place to bury it. I'd be kinda pissed if someone found one of my heathen cats dead, and buried it on my property without consulting me, and I rent! Plus what if the guy plans to put in a pond or something, and you just buried a dead animal in the plot? I'm gonna wait to consult him, or wait until he empties his trash, then I'll dispose of it.

Oh i think it's done smelling (until I move it), it's been there for a while, under the leaves, below the bush, behind the 3 ft tall weeds. I'm not so sure they knew it was there, they probably thought the smell was blowing over from someone else's property...

You found it, I guess you can keep it.

Really, though, if you were paid to do a cleanup, what's the big deal? Throw the dang cat away.
Do you really have to ask what to do with it? If so, ask the homeowner.

It is more like fertilizer at this stage. Let the homeowner know of the carcass and recommend disposal under a nice tree / plant. This ain't rocket science.

I know it's no laughing matter right now, but once you've been through this a few times and it's NOT happening to you, it is kinda funny.

You sure seem to get em all. It happens in my area on a weekly basis. I guess it could be funny happening to someone else. I just fail to see the humor in having to bury critters. I used to bury the abandoned dogs and cats people threw out their car windows as they drove by my farm. I often wished I could have caught them and done the same to them.. I was too fresh out from the USMC to have a nice attitude for creeps like that. I have mellowed somewhat in the last 30 years though, now I just want to stake em out on an anthill.

This strikes me as a little funny. When you guys run across dead squirrels, Rabbit or bird during a clean-up what do you do with it? I'll tell you, It goes in the trash bag with whatever i am picking up. A dead cat would be no different.

i feel your pain. i found one saturday while trimming some hedges. told the lady (old farm lady) and her exact words were "well, take a shovel and throw it across the ditch". when i was done, she asked me if i gave her cat a nice funeral, and i said "yes, do you want the flag from the casket?" i thought she was going to have to change her depends from laughing so hard. it was strange to say the least.

i guess i found use #17 for the almighty shovel...

Yesterday I was cruising along a customers yard and behold was a carcuss of som critter. It was decomposed pretty good. Before I realized it, the thing went flying across the street. Owners don't own a cat. I admit it made me think of this post right away.

I ran into this same situation last weekend. I mowed around it. The homwowner asked me I was going to move it. I said, "no" and kept mowing. They live on a busy street. Two months ago there was a dead dog in the yard. Eventually the vultures removed it for me, although they did it in pieces over a couple of weeks. Around Christmas time there was a dead cow in the same yard. There had been a little flooding and it had washed downhill from a neighboring ranch in a seasonal creek that runs thru their yard. A dead cow, a dead dog and a dead cat in seven months on the same property. After pointing that out to the lady I asked her if she and her husband were satanists or something. She didn't laugh even though I cracked myself up.

Yup that cat is still there. I say hi to him on my weeklies over there... maybe some day I'll till the bones and fur into the soil when the smell subsides....

We were at a customers house the other day found a dead possum in the middle of the yard Lady handed Mark a shovel so he could take it to the ditch I was up by the truck and liked to gagged because of the smell
Got back to the shop and there was another dead possum in the road at the driveway We gave him that job to.
