Anyone able to tell me anything about the mower in the follwing description?
Older dixie chopper, 60 in deck 24 hp onan motor, serial number 38789, and 6024 sidewinder written on the front. Estimated to be 10-15 years old. Has 496 hours on it. Seems to be in good shape overall. Anyone have any idea what year this mower would be? What kind of price would you expect to pay for such a mower and would it be expected to last much longer? Seller is asking 2000 dollars. Is this a good deal? Thanks.

The first 2 numbers in the S/N are they year built, listed in reverse. So, you should have a 1983 model there. DC has not used Onan engines for many, many years. Value of that mower, if it is a DC, and a 1983 model, is probably about $500.00 or so. Onan engine parts can be hard to get, and very expensive. I would walk away from that machine.

actually that cant be right because I typed in the serial number wrong. It is 338789. No way it was made in 1933. We are thinking it is a 1989. It is an Onan Boss 24 hp sidewinder series. Still not think its worth buying for 1500? Anyone input?

They must have changed the way they do their serial numbers at some point, because what I described is the way they have done it for many years. It is still not worth over $500.00 with that Onan engine on it. Sounds like a machine DC might want to buy for their museum collection.

That machine is an 1989 model. It could be a chain drive unit or one of the first hydro drive units. I had one of the hydro units with the boss 24 engine. not a bad machine in its day. The one real problem we had was the valve seats and we did have a pto gear box quite.
