J-Thomas sells replacement bearings for the gravely XL sealed spindles.
Has anyone here replaced such bearings, and if so can you advise tools/techniques.

Well Ken, We got out of the Gravely's before they came out with these spindles, But after looking at the break-down at J-Thomas it looks just as easy as the older styles. You can leave the assembly in the deck if you can get it jacked up high enough to get under it. Just remove the pulley and the blade, Using a short 2x4 on the end of the shaft and a hammer drive the shaft and lower bearing out the bottom then come up from the bottom with a drift punch and drive the top bearing out.
Install the new bottom bearing drop the shaft and spacer in then install the top bearing with a pipe nipple long enough to clear the shaft making sure the nipple is only big enough to contact the inner bearing race so you don't damage the grease seal in the bearing, You may even add a pipe cap on the one end of the nipple so you can tap in the center to drive the top bearing home.
