View Full Version : Too hard to start?

I have a Bradley (pretty much...no name) walk behind. 32" 10.5hp Briggs. With the airfilter on, it takes close to 30 (yes...THIRTY!) pulls to get it started the first time for the day. After that...it starts pretty much on the first/second pull the rest of the day. With the air filter OFF, it starts within 3 pulls, and first/second the rest of the day. Why would this be so difficut to pull-start with the air filter on? and by the way, the air filter is 98% clean, pretty much brand new. MAYBE 2 hours on it. What do you think? THANKS!

Take your spark plug wire off, Get a "known good" spark plug, even if it is a used plug, it will do. Just do not use a plug that has been in the bottom of your parts drawer for 25 years.
Put the plug wire on the test plug, hold it _SECURELY_ against the side of the engine, and _not_ on paint.
Have a friend, make _sure_ it is a friend, pull, or turn engine over at starting speed, easier if equipped with electric start.
Check to see that you have a nice, blue spark every time it should fire. If the spark seems intermittent, then it will be much harder to start.
Believe it or not, as long as you do not panic and pull the test plug off the engine case, or frame or any other good return (ground), then you can hold test plug in your bare hand and will _never_ get the shock of your life.

Could also be a worn out camshaft.

Forgot to mention something; you indicated this is a recoil start. If you remove the spark plug from engine it will be much easier to test the fire power, as the engine will spin much more freely. I suggest that, if you use the plug from engine as the test plug, and do _NOT_ get good fire with it, then be sure and use another test plug as well, as the plug in engine might be bad. Even a new plug out of box can be bad, so always try a second plug if first test shows "bad fire".
