I have a 2001 Exmark LZR HP. Just did the wheel bearings on one side and the races were a bear to remove and install but I got it done. Here are the questions...

1) That big cavity inside between the wheel bearings....exactly how much grease do you put in there? There are no fittings on these wheels BTW.

2) Is there a decent specility tool for bearing race removal and installation?

.... I use what they call a bearing splitter and or press. Sometimes a bearing puller.

A slide hammer with a 3 jaw puller attached.

Turn the jaws around to grab the inside of the bearing race and jerk the race out.

I took a steering shaft out of a Sears Lawn tractor and cut a section 12" long out of it, Use it to drive bearings and races out of wheels, Deck spindles, Castor fork tubes and many other places.
If it's a tapered roller bearing with separate race I have one of these to reinstall the races; http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/s-10101/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2004136/showCustom-0/p-2004136/N-111+10205+600009649/c-10105/TID-0820 It also works well for installing grease seals.

For a severly stuck race in a hub weld a bead all the way around the center of it and it will just about drop out.

You can also torch cut a slit in the race and it will drop out, if you are good with the torch it will not damage the hub.

Generally a drift or punch with a good sharp edged point tip from the oposite side in a star pattern will work well.

I usually do not fill the void between but do put in a liberal amount of grease.

Unless the outer race is bad, I usually leave them in the housing. I clean the housing of old grease, inspect the race, repack the bearings and I'm done. No need to put very much grease in the cavity of the wheel, it really won't do anything but attract dust.

i was told by the tech department of Dexter axle...the center of a hub just needs a thin film of grease to prevent rust. ive probably packed more bearings than anyone here except Restrorob, and never had a problem this way.
