Last year in Washington DC, a police officer training for bicycle duty over hydrated and died. When it starts to get to hot, I usually wait till the evening to finish mowing.

I don't think you can over hydrate. You stomach only holds so much before you throw up. Drink lots of water before you mow and during is what they say.

"waiting until the evening" is for girls, and senior citizens.
...and bicycle cops.

I just finished for the day here and my thermometer is showing 105. If I drink too much I feel crappy, I try to drink 6-8 oz before I start a yard, the same after I finish mowing and another 6-8 oz after trimming. It doesnt seem to make me feel sick like that

I keep a bunch of little 8 oz drinks, non carbonated, on ice, and slam them all day.

How can you possibly "over hydrate"?

Yes you can possibly die from drinking too much water. It has happened before, you have to drink very large amounts in a short period of time.
water intoxication (also known as hyperhydration or water poisoning) is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain function that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits by a very rapid intake of water.
If water enters the body more quickly than it can be removed, body fluids are diluted and a potentially dangerous shift in electrolyte balance occurs.

I haven't heard about this although from the previous post is sounds possible. I have heard about drinking water that is too cold when you are very hot and people dying from it.

Wouldnt mowing grass and sweating all day take care of releasing that water, making it pretty much impossible to take in too much water?

Yes you can over hydrate.
Haven't you guys heard the stories about Ecstasy and when people take it in the club they feel like they are very hot so they start drinking water or what ever is around. They drink soo much they drown themselves with water and die.

I try to balance my fluid intake out between Gatorade, water, and iced tea. Yea I know the iced tea aint that good for ya on a hot day but It gives me that kick that gatorade can't always give. I have never actually stopped to think about how much I drink at a time. Just a few mouthfuls here and there!
Today, I ended up drinking 2 quarts of gatorade, about 3/4 of a gallon of water, and about 1/4 of a gallon of iced tea. Kept me going with no problems!!

If I remember that cop had drank TONS of water just prior to his training or whatever he was doing...sometimes marathon runners will do the same thing, which threw his body chemistry so out of whack that it killed him. Something to be aware of but I doubt any of us sit chugging water in the mornings before leaving...

In ultimate fighter some of those guys will dehydrate 20lbs then weigh in, then hydrate back up in 24 hours.

correct and it can be done even easier with soda although that is from over balancing the sodium pump and causing all kinds of havoc.
But most people can't ingest enough quick enough to do it. So drink up, if you are sweating buckets you're not a likely candidate anyway and if your working while sweating your hands will be too busy to hold the water jug long enough.

Most of the time i load up the cooler in the truck with water & Gator Aid. Then when iam running the blower, i usally have a half a .5 liter of water while doing this. Always take extra shirts to mow in, then change after a few yards.

also you can go a bit crazy from the imbalance, usualy time is required to let the imbalance of electrolytes re-balance as tt were, and/or water mixed with sugar (or salt can't remember which) is given. Some times medication is used, depending on the severity. also de-hydration can cause the same thing, your mental status can be affected by a lack of water, and this will cause an imbalacne, re-hydration cures this. but it would take a lot of water, you would have to drink several gallons in less than an hour to cause death by hyper-hydration.

Have you ever heard of this being used as a method of commiting suicide?

i have, people drink too much water and they do die, from what i am told it is not painless, as it causes a huge migraine headache (i have a reliable source in the psychology department, but i don't wish to say whom)

I would be concerned if Lco's were beer-bonging 2-3 beers at a time on the job, but then college age kids do this and yes I know some die but that's what happens, ok. As for the temps, when it hits 100+ I don't work... You can call me a coward, but it only takes one time when your body can't deal with it. Somebody catches heat stroke / exhaustion, it is very possible you will not be allowed to go out in the heat again (and I mean for years, it really slows you down, it is bad voodoo).
As for water, I down 16 ounces before every yard, it goes down smooth and fast because I don't swallow usually but yes:
If you pour it down the wrong throat / attempt to breathe, you can about drown LOL this has happened to me and it is the worst thing, you're just coughing and choking and very embarrassing, also sometimes water comes out through my nose.
Other than that, I dare say you'd have to swallow at least a liter or more at a time, really fast (no swallowing, WOThroat LOL), and possibly also after you're already dehydrated but either way, don't drink more than you can hold and on that note, don't push your limits, either... A pint at a time, that should do it.
On the note of the migraine... That's interesting, I only remember this after taking in large quantities of water after a heavy night of drinking, would it be that this is again caused by attempting to fix an already existing dehydration issue?

i think the headache is caused by the beer, not the water in this case. but large quantities of water can cause a headache, as well as dehydration.

No but i do remember a news story where a college student died from it during a fraternity hazing ceremony.. appearently He was forced to drink so many pitchers of water through a funnel that the sodium in his body dropped to lethal levels and his brain swelled. The fraternity thought it would be safer than using beer.

Alchol causes the body to dehydrate. If you drink large quantities of water while drinking alchol, you can lessen the chances of headache due to a hangover. Doesn't work for most though.

i had food posining saterday and spent most of the day in the tub with it comming out both ends(not somthing i would wish on the devil). i got so dehydrated after 10 hours of this i had to go to the er. and when i was leaving i was talking to the doctor about how much i need to drink because i was still very noshus(sp). he told me that the average body could injest 1.2 liters of fluid per hour. that is all you stomache can take. so i am assuming that if you guess are drinking at this rate you should be fine. so that means that you should be drinking around 2 gallons a day, to max out your intake
