Is it killing the grass mostly in patches? If so, it could be a fungus called red thread or snow mold. When did it start appearing? If it was early spring, and then it developed further, it could also be snow mold. Although I'm having trouble telling from the picture, these are fairly similar to your problem.

Here are a couple of links to info about it:

Hey Lowgap, it's probably brown patch fungus. We've got it terribly over here. Did you folks out west get as much rain as we did in June? That's what did it for us. Excessive humid and moist conditions for multiple nights or high nitrogen levels in the soil can cause it. If it appears to be mostly (not entirely) in circles and first started almost overnight, that's a good sign it is brown patch.

1: Check with Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. for a product for brown patch. I've heard they have stuff for residential use but I'm not sure.
2: Keep the lawn cut high.
3: If you are irrigating at all, do it early in the morning heavily for once or twice a week; no more.
4: If you don't find any treatments at those stores, I've used Bayleton which is a granular. So far this summer, it's been very good. I bought it at Lesco.

Good Luck.:)
