i have an older redmax trimmer maybe 3-4 years old. it takes maybe 3-4 times to pull to start it. it will run for alittle bit at full throttle then it will start jerking and sputtering then turn off. is this a carb problem, engine, or what?

Does it start right back up or does it need to sit?

Ok just process of elimination when it starts jerking and sputtering can you use the choke to keep it running or does it make no difference and still stalls?

no difference, it dies

Check and make sure the fuel filter is still on the line inside the tank. Also check the fuel lines for cracks.

Can you easily disconnect your kill wires from the on/off switch coming out of the grip? Usually one to ground and the other goes under the shroud to the coil disconnect them if you can to eliminate the switch/wires from shorting out while the units running, also if someone has removed the top engine shroud they may have pinched the one wire and it may be intermittently grounding out.

Sure way to discount shorting out is to pull the shroud and disconnect kill wire from the coil. On Echo you pull the shroud that covers the clutch assembly(four screws).

Maybe check to see if there is carbon build up in the trimmers carb. I don't think this is the problem because that usually just causes the trimmer to loose power but it is worth a shot.:D
