Well, there really is no very best for that price range...it would be a WELL used machine to get a price that low...look into a large walkbehind.

wright standers ive seen that cheap on ebay i guess they are ztrs techincally so im sure you can find other sit down ones used in that price range maybe not the best condition but u gotta use what u can when u are first starting

How much do u plan to mow? what type of terrain? Commercial or residential?

Don't even think about it. Do right by yourself, and get a walk behind if you can't quite pull off a Z right now - a REAL Z. Don't be fooled by thinking "Well, it LOOKS like a Z, so it MUst do alright. Fact of the matter is, if you're planning to use the machine more than twice a week - for more than 2 or 3 hours at a time, than you are going to want something that's built for that. These little units re NOT built for that...although by sight, they appear to be the same. there is so much to these machines that doesn't show but is so important. The bearings, the pumps, the (hydro)motors, the construction of the deck - and its pivot points, and a whole bunch of other things - right down to the starter for the motor.
If you are serious about doing this...get a commercial machine. I guarantee you that a $3000 wb will cut circles around a $3000 "Z", and what's more important, is the fact that a real machine is built to cut grass ALL day EVERY day.
