It seems to be a rather bad nutsedge season this year:cry:
I just wanted to see if you charge for an extra service to control it or do you include it in your regular program.
thanks

if its just a spot here and there I don't charge (but probably should) if it was a large area I would charge $10 per K with a $25 min.

I have in my contracts that small outbreaks are included in my program. Larger outbreaks I will treat and charge accordingly.

anything other than regular service constitutes another charge.

I purchased a gallon of Basagran 6 years ago...I am just happy to be using it up...
Separate Charge. I offer broad leaf weed control and pre emergent crabgrass control. It's nothing personal just business.

I added an extra application for summer time weeds, such as nutsedge, crabgrass, etc. Most of our customers pay 12 mos. a year or are level pays so I average it out. Works great.

Two years ago I had a call from a customer about nutsedge. I went and looked at the lawn and it was loaded w/ nutsedge. I told them I would be happy to spray w/ Manage for an extra charge. They said to hold off that they would get back to me. They called a couple days later and cancelled sevice. I called them and asked why??? They said that they contacted TGCL and they offer nutsedge control as part of their regular program. So I lost that one. I don't know what TGCL sprayed the lawn with, but I'll be damned if I'll treat an acre lawn for nutsedge at no extra charge.
out breaks like this yr. ,we do it at n/c.. but a un-managed property that is over watered and thin and the client has no interest in improving the lawn thru seeding ,i hit them with an extra charge..
you get to know who the boogs are..

Per client basis. Large contract-included. Small contract-added charge.
Always have a backpack with manage in it this time of year. If a large out break, i inform client but meet them in the middle on price. $30 per application sounds about right.

So exactly how big are these properties that you are charging $30 for nutsedge control. Like I said in an earlier post, I had an acre lot that was loaded w/ nutsedge I'm talking 70% of the lot was covered w/ nutsedge. You're telling us that you would treat something this size for $30????

$30 for added charge to small client. 8-10k
Most of my large clients know better than to water too much this time of year. And if it rains like crazy and there's a break out, it's included in their service. My large clients spend a premium price and deserve that extra app so their lawn looks like it should.

We charge two dollars per minute when spraying nutsedge. Keep in mind that effective nutsedge control is only effective when the nutsedge is very tall.

2 dollars per minute??? I've never heard of lawn treatments charged by the minute. I have always charged per 1000 sq. ft... If it works for you and your customers, I'd say more power to you.

So are you a slow walker or fast walker. Those minutes can add up quick at $120 hour.

I agree with all the above. If it's small amounts, I will not charge.
But if we're talking 500 sq ft or more, I charge.
Important note: Nutsedge must be tall and uncut for spray to be effective. (spray it when it's tall) Too often I get there, and it's just been mowed - I won't even attempt to spray it when it's short cuz it won't work. So this often requires me a return trip after I give the customer written instructions not to mow the area. This often adds up to 2 or 3 trips on my part. Then figure in your time, gasoline, etc. If in doubt, charge them.
My charge to spray = two dollars per minute with a suitable minimum.
A fine spray (mist) works best.
Then wait at least two days before mowing.
Manage or Basagran work very well. A spreader/sticker is also recommended.
For tiny outbreaks, nutsedge can be pulled out by hand.
Special treatments such as this are too often a headache, so don't be afraid to charge for your time (headache).

you should never ever pull nutsedge by hand. maybe one or two plants in a flowerbed but not the turf. by pulling nutsedge all yer doing is making more work for yourself later.
repeated sprayings of MSMA and Manage plus a sticker mixed will eventually get rid of it but it may take a season or two to fully eliminate it.

A nursery in my area told me that they are not going to make Manage next year. Will have to use sedgehammer. Have you heard of this??

Same stuff just a new name. I think someone bought up somebody. I started using PBI Gordon's Q4 herbicide this year. Awesome crabgrass and broadleaf weed control. It is only labeled for nutsedge supression. It really burnt down the sedge nicely. I don't know if I'll have any long term control, but it will take care of the sedge at least short term and keep the phone from ringing.

New news. Gordon's Surge with sulfentrazone is new this year. It kills most weeds--and it also kills nutsedge. i use it in a hansprayer for problem weeds--and nutsedge.(Nutsedge at $15 extra of course). Considering the extra time to treat nutsedge i am probably losing money.

Hey RigglePLC how much surge do you put in your handpump? Thanks Terp

Terp,
th label rate is 1.2 to 1.5 ounces per 1000 sqft. Since i spray at low pressure and cover about 1000 sqft per quart--I use 1.5 ounces per quart. (6 ounces per gallon.) Calibrate with water on concrete to find your coverage per gallon with hand sprayer. I add crop oil or wetting agent--it only costs about 7 cents more. Cheap. Main cost for hand sprayer is labor.
I often use a one quart hand sprayer. They are convenient--and I can carry four of them in my pickup between the bags of fertilizer. I also have a holster on my spreader to carry a quart size hand sprayer. If I see a big weed --i shoot it.
