What do you guys use as your standard overhang on steps, for example you built a techo wall and the job had bluestone treads in the spec. Is there an industry standard ?

1/4"-1" :)

building codes say at least a 1" "nosing" on stair treads. More is okay.

I guess I didn't really ask the right question. What would you consider too much overhang? We used better than 2 inches on the job referred to and walking up them after installing the first one it seemed too much to me, it could potentially be a catch point for toes and thus a liability. I am no longer working for myself so the final say is no longer mine but I wish it were sometimes, perhaps it will be soon enough............

I wouldn't go more than an inch, especially on bluestone treads. You could probably get away with a bit more on something that is a bit more "bulky" like a wall cap.
