Dealer versus local Shop

Ok, so I have an older hydro walk behind (Deere, circa 2000, 550ish hours) that needs some work. I got the mower second-hand and therefore haven't delt with the local Deere dealer yet.
There is a guy in our area who has a shop behind his house that does work on small engines all the way up to ZTRs. I've talked to numerous people who recomend him.

My question is:

What are your opinions regarding getting a mower fixed by a dealer or a local shop?

ONLY if you have heard good things about this other guy compare his labor rate with the dealers, If he comes in cheaper I think I would give him a try.
