Honda hydro, and Toro proline\Exmark metro 21. Are the two top of the line 21-inch mowers.
The Honda is the best bagger bar none. It is an excellent bagger in dry, as well as in adverse wet and thick conditions . Despite the new twin blade micro cut setup on the redesigned 2005 and later Honda's, Toro is slightly the better mulcher, and with the kawi engine option, has a gallon gas tank.
All in all I come down on the side of the Honda as the best all around 21-inch mower, best bagger, good mulcher, reliable mechanically.

we use toro prolines with the honda engines on them, we have cut thousands of yards this year using them and them only. we have had to modify somethings on them, but over all they are tuff!

Have Toro prolines and Honda commercials....have had more problems with hondas, but engines are reliable...Toros are heavy but seem to last me longer without repairs.

Don't go with a Snapper. The cut is terrible, and the squeaky disk drive can get a little annoying. I've had one since May and I wish I would have went with a Deere, Honda, or Toro.

The snapper comercial 21" mower or a toro proline/exmark metro 21. I have a toro proline 21" and a commercial snapper. I prefer the cut of the toro most of the time but in some conditions the snapper is better.
What is your budget for a push mower?

Toro w/ KAW 6.5hp is what I use. They hold up very well. The blade/selfpropel handle is sometimes hard to hold with small hands or when they are wet.

I have the Toro 20057 with the external oil filter 6.75 hp B/S. You get what you pay for. This machine is awesome. I had Honda's and moved up to the Toro. There is a difference in the Home Cheapo stuff and what you get from a dealer. Research the companies web sites and look at model #'s. Shop around and find good dealer support. Good Luck.
P.S. all my honda's were Crapsman and the deck/bagger sucked, the motor ran o.k. 5.5hp, but had no balls. Prissy little mower's, couldn't cut nothin'.

i have the cheapest, crappiest high wheel push mower i could buy. weedeater brand of all things. the only thing i use it for is overgrown (usually 2'+) areas that i dont feel like fighting with a string trimmer and a swampy area at one customer's house. we are blessed with a customer base where small gates are extremely rare. it has held up well for two seasons, i paid $169 for it and it has paid for itself quite a few times.

I made the mistake of going with the snapper and that damn disk drive is very annoying, sounds like a short quick whistle
anyone know how to get rid of the squeak ????

Clean or replace the ridged belt. This is the higher of the two belts. Make sure that the engagement adjustment spring is adjusted properly. Many don't realize the engagement sprint is adjustable. The belts get small rocks and garbage in them creating slippage and will make the mower squeal. You can also the replace hex shaft ridge belt mate pulley with a steel one. The aluminum pulleys tend to wear down and make them more prone to squeal. These are all simple inexpensive fixes, there is no reason to have a Snapper that squeals.
If you're having a problem with the cut not looking good on a Snapper there is something wrong. These mowers have a nice cut when everything is working correctly and the conditions don't have to be ideal. Perhaps a high lift blade would help. The Toro Pro Line mowers cut a little nicer in my opinion but if the grass is heavy or wet nothing will pick the grass up like a Snapper.

Have 2 Hondas, app. 1-2 years old, and 2 older toros. The toros are heavy, and built well but seem to lack the power of the honda's for sure!! Although I was unsure of the Honda's decks, so far they are holding up grate!

I meant to say this in my previous post but forgot. I make this statement having not only used the equipment but from a small engine repair business background. I believe that Honda makes a great lawn mower engine (or just about any power equipment engine). It would certainly be my first choice in 21" walk behind mowers. That said I like to see their engines on some of the other manufacturers equipment. The balance of their mowers isn't bad, it's just not a stand out like the engine itself. I've also seen many of the Harmony (fiberglass) decks that have either cracked or have chunks broken out of them. Of course abuse can happen to any brand of mower but I see this problem every few weeks to at least monthly on Honda in particular.

The best push mower is the one that stays on the trailer. I hate using a push mower!! I only have one small office complex that I use a Honda push mower on and I'm not that happy with the honda- It leaves swirl marks in the grass

I've had my honda Harmony 21" for over 8 years and it works and looks as good as new.
The best thing i have ever gotten from Home Depot. Cost around $500.
these mowers don't rust, they got Xenoy decks and wheels.

We run 5 toro commercial 21s. We tried Snapper commercial just once. Great suck, but not as good a cut, Plus toro has the bbc system--blade brake system where you can empty without shutting off engine. Their control handle also makes it much easier to turn around at each end of the lawn because it is all the way across the back of the handle. Snappers self propell bar is only on one side. Yes ive heard and seen guys bungy the controlls together on the snappers but the blade is still turning when you empty

Wouldn't you like to be able to buy a new one now for that price. I hope you didn't take my previous reply as knocking Honda. That wasn't my intention. Sorry about calling it fiberglass, I should have said resin composite.
