Why is it that so many of them seem to be for sale right at the 150k mile mark? What is it about that mark? Are there parts that are thought to give out around then (tranny, turbo, ball joints etc)? Just seems strange.

And while I'm at it, those who know, what do/have you seen as far as mpg? 4-5?

End of lease. Parts are easily available, Mpg 8-9 with mine with a 400 gallon water tank and 65 Big John tree spade, which is like pulling a parachute around.

haha, got pics? is your's a 4700?

I've got a lot of experience driving them but I don't know a lot about them. Are there certain years/models to stay away from? Same engine used or changed every few years?

my expirience is the head gasket is so close to going right at 150k oil is leaking slowing and get closer to 180k and i know of a few that blew the turbos now these are all 2003+ 4700 tow trucks that hrun all day and have hard miles on them but those engines should last longer than they are

It depends on the motor. The T444e motors are 7.3 liter powerstroke diesel v-8s same as in the ford pick-ups. The DT466 is a much better engine and should last longer. A large towing company that I see has nearly 35 international wreckers and flatbeds in their fleet. All from the years of 1997-01. about 1/2 of each motor. All the trucks have well over 300k on them still going strong. Fleet maintnence has been great to them and only 9 of them have need engine overhauls so far. (My neighboor 5 doors down is the service manager at the shop)

What company were you driving for? Rob's does handle a large majority of the PA turnpike.

I wish I had a newer International. My old 72 Loadstar is getting pretty tired.I could rebuild the motor and i rebuilt the tranny and two speed rearend a month ago. Shes been a great truck the only thing i hate about here is that dam Butterfly Hood. I have had it nail me in the head many times. She still runs but burns oil bad on the left bank.

Ryder has them and no mine is a 4900 with the dt 466 and a big john 65. I wouldn't haul much more on it. The 90 is on the brigadeer.
